DR MYSTERY '8888' by Cameron Jones
Promonews - 31st Jan 2025
A group of three friends are haunted by a lost friend in Cameron Jones's video for Manchester-based dance producer/DJ DR MYSTERY.
On a trip to Blackpool, the artist sheds her mask to join her friends within this memory, and Jones's video illustrates the elusive nature of closure and unsteady path to acceptance. In the deserted seaside town the friends revisit places and memories they once shared.
"On this project, I aimed to explore the, sadly, increasingly common loss and grief of our young people in modern Britain," says Jones. "Hypothesising loss, young adults imagine “celebrating” rather than mourning, yet neither rarely comes to pass. Unlike family, their sorrow often goes unaddressed, even in cases where friends are closer than family itself.
"I wanted the audience to perceive the friends' pilgrimage with moments of discontinuity and absence, symbolising the emptiness left by their late friend. The editing style adds a raw, chaotic dimension to an otherwise documentary-style aesthetic, capturing the genuine interactions between the group as they grapple with their collective grief.
"A clash of warmth and coldness pervades, creating a powerful contrast that reflects the song’s own upbeat yet melancholic tones."
