Hannah Georgas 'Fake Happy' by Jamie Shipson-Mourn
Rob Ulitski - 14th July 2023
Jamie Shipson-Mourn directs a heartfelt promo for Canadian artist Hannah Georgas.
The video follows a scraggly white character stuck in a sombre loop of searching for meaning and connection, but unable to find it. Traversing grimy London backstreets and taking pause at random street corners and bus stops, it's evident the character is searching for a missing piece, but it isn't until the end that we realise what that might be.
The enigmatic ending uses a dreamlike, repetitive sequence of shots to make viewers question what's real and what isn't, and the appearance of Georgas suggests that this character might just be a missing piece of herself instead.
It's a great concept and one that is very much open to interpretation,. The cinematic aesthetic - thanks in part to shooting on film - also keeps things gritty and lifelike, even with the presence of a surreal main character.
