Joe Armon-Jones & Maxwell Owin ft Lex Amor 'Grief' by Denisha Anderson
Rob Ulitski - 18th May 2023
Denisha Anderson directs an entrancing promo for Joe Armon-Jones and Maxwell Owin, with some vibrant animation from Louise Saunders.
The hypnotic promo is a dazzling display of creativity, featuring offbeat performance vibes in an out-of-this-world, ever-changing environment.
Packing a smorgasbord of saturated imagery into the visual, Anderson and Saunders take the viewer on a soulful ride through space and is a self-proclaimed love letter to the millennial generation which totally embodies the dreamscape lyrics and flow of this stunning downtempo track. "
"This video is for the millennials, inspired by weird and wonderful storylines and colour pallets of Rockos, Modern Life, to Ren & Stimpy and Doug," says Denisha Anderson of the video that was a three month labour of love in the making.
"I have always wanted to make an animation and to make one with a very old friend and collaborator Louise Saunders was an absolute dream. Louise keeps me grounded when I give her absolutely bonkers ideas. She tells me ‘nah’ or that’s ‘brilliant’ which is needed as my mind can go off on a plethora of tangents.
"When it came to the story, I learned quickly that with animations you can go anywhere and do anything so creativity is limitless but can also be intimidating, because it can feel too expansive.
"Nonetheless, I welcomed the challenge I set myself, as originally the artists wanted live action, but I convinced them otherwise. This led to numerous video calls with Lou, where I’d freestyle thoughts on images, she’d sketch and share as we go along, then we would build from there.
"All was done via Video calls, including her colouring, as I’d share what pallet combo as she’d be holding her phone up to her iPad, so I could watch... since I had just had surgery on my foot and she lives out of London, it was the only way it could be done.
"Despite the unconventional and our obsession with perfection, I can say we came out unscathed and very proud.”
