Charlotte Wessels 'Afkicken' by Adam Barker
Rob Ulitski - 11th Jan 2023
Adam Barker directs a a visceral tale of ritual and sisterhood for Dutch artist Charlotte Wessels.
The video for Wessels' symphonic metal epic Afkicken is an apocalyptic horror involving giants and human sacrifice - a fascinating blend of cosmic horror with a dazzling fantasy dreamworld.
In the video, Wessels plays the lead role of a woman who suffers a traumatic encounter with a forest giant, leading her into a female support group who are not quite as they seem.
In classic Hammer horror style, Barker dripfeeds crucial elements of the narrative, in cutaways to the looming giant and a human transformation to increase the mystery and dread. And it climaxes with the women engaging in a dramatic bonfire-lit ceremony...
Boasting brilliant visual effects work, top-notch performances and excellent location, the video examines how our time on earth is finite, and how Mother Nature will reclaim herself from the chaos we leave behind.
