Will Clark directs a curiously enigmatic promo for pianist and composer Neil Cowley's new album Battery Life, where the director visualises elements of the music in an an evocative string of abstract vignettes.

Clark places Cowley at the core of a series of these moments, that tread a line between dreamworld and reality, as a gardener, making symbolic movements with a real spade. 

The composition of the visual - in particular the close-up shots of objects and details - helps elevate the dreamlike vibe of the piece, and builds upon the themes of missing memories and gaps in the narrative of events.

"Battery Life is an album of abstract memories and stolen excerpts," Clark explains. "It is Neil’s perception of the past before the detail is filled in. Blurred pictures, strange details, a feeling and above all the freedom to redefine the past at his whim.

"In an age where we are able to archive virtually any amount of life experience at the press of a button, it calls into question the value of a memory, both undetailed and detailed."
