Father John Misty 'Q4' by Grant James
Rob Ulitski - 11th Mar 2022
Following the reimagining of Old Hollywood for the video for Funny Girl, Father John Misty returns with the promo for Q4 - a tribute to mid-20th century movie title sequences.
Directed by Grant James, the video takes the form of an extended opening credits sequence in the style popularised by Saul Bass and other great title designers - to tie in with the artist's new album Chloë & The Next 20th Century.
Utilising era-specific typestracting and title animation, the video plays upon tropes of the time, whilst paying homage to some absolute classics. it also manages to sketch a line of a narrative about two women, one a ballet dancer and its source material - a novle called As If.
Blazing a path of his own in a sea of nostalgic content, Father John Misty is looking further back than his contemporaries in the industry, and reintroducing audiences to the magic of yesteryear.
