Scarlxrd 'Can't Die' by James Barnes
Rob Ulitski - 10th Nov 2021
James Barnes directs a frantic performance promo for trap-metal superstar Scarlxrd.
Intertwining traditional cinematography with FPV camerawork, the video captures the artist's trademark impassioned performance style, backdropped by unique, textural locations.
Glitchy visual effects and a gritty black and white grade create a haunting yet high concept aesthetic, which perfectly fits within the surreal concept.
JAMES BARNES:
This is our attempt to reveal the new mask and music within a cinematic performance video.
"I feel pretty lucky to be working with Scarlxrd - no brief, no pitching, he’ll just send me the music and a bunch of references – usually films or animations I’ve never even heard of and have to research – and then we’ll just chat ideas. He knows his fans so well that he has a vision for each song and where that fits into the Scarlxrd story.
"Can’t Die was our attempt to reveal the new mask and music within a cinematic performance video. Producer James Dearden found an amazing location that offered up so many spots for DoP Mike O'Connor and FPV genius Anthony Rubenstein to do their thing. Dan Moran’s monochrome grade is pretty flawless IMO."
