Kawala 'Searching' by Luke Logan-Malik

Rob Ulitski - 26th Oct 2021

Luke Logan-Malik directs an upbeat promo, battling the elements all the while, for London band Kawala.

Under rolling grey clouds on Blackpool's golden sands, the group battle the autumn chill and some fearsome winds with a smile, giving everything in a zesty band performance of Searching.

Transitioning from a moody daytime setting to intoxicating night setups, the cinematic visuals match the pace of the track - and a last-minute flurry of lighting effects adds an enigmatic strand to the concept.

LUKE LOGAN-MALIK:

We set up shop and waited for gaps in the weather. Boy were we blessed.

"When I first listened to this track, I was on Blackpool Pier. Little did I know that only two weeks later I'd be stood on the beach shooting the video for what is an undeniably catchy summer banger.

"Alas, the conditions that had inspired the video concept on this glistening summers day, weren't to be easily repeated. I found myself, crew and band in tow, on a windswept Blackpool beach, getting pebble dashed by the incoming gale-force winds as an angry sky threatened to make a mockery of our best laid plans.

"Aptly, this is a track about hope. And it was this hope that meant we set up shop and waited for gaps in the weather. Boy were we blessed. An hour or so of sunshine gave us the opening to our film, before the storm on the horizon made for a barely believable, Oklahoma-esque backdrop.

"When the storm hit land it was another story. Lights went flying, band members hair went south, and we exited the beach for an early tea, in the hope the weather would pass. The band were fantastic in their approach, never once complaining - that I could hear over the wind - and being consistent in their performance levels from the first minute to the last.

"By midnight the weather was once again almost impossible. And as we shot one last pass, it was time to batten down the hatches and call it a day."
