Olivia Dean 'Slowly' by Rhory Danniells & Olivia Dean
Rob Ulitski - 16th July 2021
Rhory Danniells & Olivia Dean co-direct a stirring one-take video for Slowly.
Performed at a piano in an empty studio space, Dean embodies the understated poignancy of the track.
The lighting transitions from a standard spotlight setup to a chilling, ice-blue wash, representing the tumultuous journey in the lyrics, and the changing tides of her emotions.
RHORY DANIELLS:
Olivia had a long braid that inspired the idea of this Rapunzel-esque braid.
"Olivia was a dream to work with because though she had had quite a clear vision, she was still open to ideas and trying things out.
"Olivia wanted this to be a one shot video of her performing at the piano. At a recent live show, she had quite a long braid and that inspired the idea of starting on this massive Rapunzel-esque braid.
"Our DOP, Kia Fern Little, did a fantastic job with the lighting. We wanted the video to look and feel different at the end, but to also hide the lighting changes and keep the focus on the performance. The fact it goes from Olivia under one spotlight to a fully lit ice blue space so seamlessly shows that Kia nailed it!
"Obviously all of these things are just sprinkles on top of what is a mesmerising performance from Olivia."
