Nancy '7ft Tall Post Suicidal Feel Good Blues' by Rik Burnell
Rik Burnell, best known as a DoP, takes up directing duties to capture a performance by maverick singer-songwriter Nancy on a Sussex hillside.
Burnell keeps things simple, trusting the location and a few useful props - including a fair amount of facepaint - to frame a performance which highlights the homemade nature of Nancy's approach - and the more flamboyant side of his nature. And filming on 16mm clearly contributes to a certain timeless quality.
RIK BURNELL:
"We aimed to be audacious and celebratory, then switch to intriguing and endearing."
"The DIY nature of Nancy’s approach to his music informed the simplicity of the brief and the tone of the shoot - a simple performance video in a field; just Nancy, a camera and a few ideas.
"With a sheet of glass, some paint, a blanket I found and a loose inversion of the ending of Texas Chain Saw Massacre, we tried to be audacious and celebratory, then switch to intriguing and endearing, starting with that great sound that happens when you quickly wiggle your finger between your lips while going 'uuurrrr'..."
