Mada Mada 'Autonome' by Alexandre Richard
Rob Ulitski - 12th Nov 2020
A man battles with inner turmoil in Alexandre Richard's stunning video for Mada Mada's Autonome.
It's set in a Montreal apartment in 1954, where an author struggling with writer's block is thrown into a contorted dance with his inner demons. The gritty reality of the apartment gives way to something else, and in the midst of his torment, salvation of sorts arrives, when a gentle touch comes to mind.
Documenting a sense of struggle and anguish through introspective choreography, the video is hugely arresting - not least due to the compelling presence of dancer and choreographer Charles-Alexis Desgagnés as the author - aided by superb sound design and haunting cinematography by Graham Gs.
A perfect storm of performance and art, Richard has created a special piece of work.
