D Block Europe x Aitch 'UFO' by KC Locke
KC Locke combines sex with VFX for the team-up of D Block Europe and Aitch's trippy, fantastical and brazen video for UFO.
Locke throws the world of his grime stars into slick fantasy where two girls slip into a different dimension during a night of partying with Young Abz and Dirtbike LB and Aitch - accompanied by some comic interplay between the artists.
With great work from his regular collaborators - including DoP Stefan Yap's cinematography, and the boldly colourful grade by Alex Gregory - Locke has achieved his ambitious vision through motion control and post FX with real aplomb. Just a few days after his nomination for Best New Director at this year's UKMVAs, he has also arguably expanded the limits of what is possible for the whole grime video genre.
"I used a simple hourglass to be the opening shot and origin of this space entity concept which passed into the female characters and sent them on a trippy out of body experience powered by music and feeling.
"I have always wanted to use VFX to help me tell stories and this was one of few projects which allowed me to put in the prep time to work with a VFX artist to design a world I could explore and grow. Using VFX, clever camera transitions, motion control and practical effects I was able to create a story which travelled between a motel where two girls discover a new intimate alien substance then following their minds to space.
"Combining VFX, set builds, motion control and handheld techniques this video for me showcases how multiple disciplines can be woven together in a seamless way with precisely considered editing and care, where every cut is considered and emotive."
