Bosley 'Are We Giving Up?' by Gavin Youngs
Rob Ulitski - 21st Sept 2020
The tale of the Princess and the Pea gets a more surreal, contemporised update in Gavin Youngs' video for Bosley.
In the visual for Are We Giving Up?, we see the artist perform on a perpetually growing stack of mattresses, desperately trying to stay on top of things - literally and metaphorically - but failing in his task.
No matter what methods he employs, another mattress is waiting to be dropped from the Heavens, entombing him in dense layers of garish fabric and squeaky springs.
Totally fresh and unique aesthetically, DoP Phillip Kaminiak mirrors the offbeat concept with sombre colour schemes and dramatic lighting, whilst Bosley's performance takes the visual to new heights (if you'll pardon the pun).
GAVIN YOUNGS:
"The video for Are We Giving Up? sets the artist on a Sisyphean cycle of torment as mattresses fall down onto him from the gods. Bosley faces the wrath of a modern ‘Princess and the Pea’ fantasy in his relentless pursuit to make it work.
"Inspired by the lonely and abandoned mattresses dumped on the streets of Berlin, that often feature questions of an apoloclyptic nature, the film pushes this break-up song to also ask ‘Are We Giving Up?’ on our future."
