Joel Corry ft. MNEK 'Head & Heart' by Elliot Simpson
Rob Ulitski - 28th July 2020
Elliot Simpson devises an entertaining split-screen narrative for Joel Corry's Head & Heart, featuring MNEK, as he explores the importance of having a positive outlook on life.
In both halves of the screen a young man goes about the same daily routine - but one side of the screen he is incredibly miserable, and unsuccessful. In the other, he's happy, popular and a big success. And while the 'head' side of frame is desaturated, awkward and hopeless, the 'heart' side is rosy, optimistic and fun.
DoP Stefan Yap matches the two concepts in terms of framing and camera movement, with alternate lighting setups and styling used to contrast the mood and tone. Meanwhile, performers Joel Corry and MNEK also occupy the split screen too.
Ultimately the two versions of the young man - actually played by twins Luke and Solomon Adlam - meet at the climax of the video. In the end, there is only one of them, with a more balanced worldview and attitude...
