Moses Sumney 'Me In 20 Years' by Allie Avital
David Knight - 23rd July 2020
Allie Avital reunites with Moses Sumney to create a poignant fantasy for Me In 20 Years, with the singer-songwriter transformed into an old man living in a strange, dystopian world.
The elderly Sumney is trapped in a small apartment in a tower block with Soviet-era amenities and no food - only milk. He is living on memories, and not much else. And then there's that strange pool, on one side of his bed, like a portal to another dimension.
As with her previous videos - including the Sasha Lane-starring Lonely World and Quarrel - Avital uses Sumney's remarkable voice for the platform of a simple narrative that reveals elements of myth and mystery. The pictures retain a close connection to the words, and through his memories and pain, and brief transformation back to his younger self, the fate of old Moses is sealed.
This is a very assured work, where you can perceive a number of important influences - including Orwell, William Burroughs, Bowie - but none are as important as the creative chemistry between the artist and the director.
