Rosie Carney 'When I Look At You' by Bjorn Franklin & Johnny Marchetta
Rob Ulitski - 16th Mar 2020
Johnny Marchetta and Bjorn Franklin explore love and loss through abstract choreography in their video for Rosie Carney.
Aesthetically reminiscent of fashion photography, the concept is born out of the ancient meaning for cherry blossoms - a metaphor for how beauty can be shortlived.
Taking on the role of DoP in addition to co-directing, Johnny Marchetta contrasts vibrant red setups with muted pastel tones, representing the traumatic dichotomy of life and death. Marchetta also keeps the camera movement deliberate and subtle, allowing the performances to unfold organically and unobtrusively.
Eventually coming full circle to rebirth, the visual balances an abstract narrative with contemporary cinematography to create a poignant experience.
