Matoma ft. MNEK, Kiana Ledé 'Bruised Not Broken' by Jeff Desom & Carlos Lopez Estrada
Rob Ulitski - 13th Aug 2019
Matoma, MNEK & Kiana Ledé will their dismembered limbs to free themselves from a nasty butcher, in this splendid video by Jeff Desom and Carlos Lopez Estrada.
We open in a butcher's fridge, where the three artists' heads are sitting detached from their bodies. Some bad stuff has been going on. We cut to their hands, which are waking each other up and planning a strategy to regroup with all of the missing body parts. Facing off against the brute in the kitchen chopping up meat for his shop, the body parts are skilful, brave and hilarious in executing their goal.
With a nod to old time cartoons, and a hint of Tim Burton, Desom and Lopez Estrada keep the gruesome themes on a level of fun, and gore and violence to a minimum. DoP Patrick Jones does a great job in bringing the idea to life, juxtaposing the brown, dimly lit hues of the kitchen with the bright blue, crisp colours inside the fridge. Armando Vernet's inspired art direction rounds off the project, populating the world with vintage Americana and charming DIY props, amongst some clever use of VFX to tie it all together. A breath of fresh air, definitely to be enjoyed on repeat.
