Freddie Gibbs & Madlib ft. Anderson .Paak 'Crime Pays' & 'Giannis' by Nick Walker
Ned Botwood - 30th July 2019
Nick Walker brings his spontaneous style to this droll series for Freddie Gibbs, which sees the American rapper searching for a work-life balance in the most unconventional places.
Haunted by memories of a violent lifestyle, Gibbs has found peace running a rural zebra farm. An honest living - or so it seems. Between stints bathing in a spring, dancing on hay bales and fishing with a bottle of champagne, he still finds time to do some satirical berating of his farm labouring employees in an outrageously funny monologue: “You know why we got you on sh** detail? Because you’re doing a sh** job.”
In the sequel, Giannis, he doubles-down on these obscenity-laden exchanges. Gibbs has taken time out for a holiday, which quickly turns nasty. Incredulous at having to meet a dealer on a jet ski, he quips: “Why the f*** did you bring me out here, man? […] Normal people meet at a motherf****** Target or cheesecake factory.”
The violent prologues to Crime Pays and Giannis refer to videos dating all the way back to 2012, suggesting that Gibbs videos are part of a rise and fall narrative that continues to unfurl.
