Stormzy 'Gang Signs & Prayer (The Film)' by Rollo Jackson
David Knight - 29th Sept 2017
Rollo Jackson has written and directed a powerful, thought-provoking short drama to accompany Stormzy's acclaimed, era-defining debut album Gang Signs & Prayer. It crystallises the themes of the album into a narrative of a young Afro-Caribbean boy in London who is drawn to become a 'bad boy', with terrible consequences. This is punctuated by Stormzy performing a number of tracks from the album.
"Young youts like myself, that grow up in the hood, we often don't know that we are actually the masters of our own destiny,” Stormzy says in the film. “There are so many things that steer us in the wrong direction however, we decide what happens in our own lives and like my album, I endeavoured for this film to portray just that. Derived from my album Gang Signs & Prayer, and written and directed by the legend that is Rollo, I'll let the visual do the talking."
