The Kooks 'Down' by Davis Silis
Jimmy Brown - 25th Mar 2014
For The Kooks' snappy and staccato single Down, Davis Silis translates the high engergy of the soundtrack with an equally snappy, fast-edited montage of contrasting visuals.
It's a big directorial breakthrough for Davis - a regular contributor to Promo News, of course – and he's done a splendid job here. He adds to the momentum varying the flow with up-close, long and upside-down shots, while Alexander Green's nifty choreography coaxes the band to bust some moves...Â
DAVIS SILIS: "When I first heard ‘Down’, it was like a punch to the gut; there’s a velocity and energy to the music that’s just so fresh and vivid. What I wanted to do was capture the essence of that first listen — the bold new sound and powerful drive The Kooks have crafted — and create a visual language that would have that same energy.
"The concept was based on looking at the song and The Kooks themselves almost metaphysically, where ideas of love and temptation could visually sit next to the textures of tone and rhythm. Above all, I wanted to shoot a video that takes viewers into the more visceral space of the music, where left can be right, up can be down and logic can be colour instead.
"Working with the band was really great too; they were all so open to creating something totally new and Luke brought so much energy to the screen. I mean, I do feel kinda bad that Pete had to get smacked so many times. But, you know... music videos."
