Detective, superhero, Mandela... and now hucksterish TV shopping salesman. Idris Elba can do it all - as he demonstrates in Jamie-James Medina's bright, breezy and multi-layered&nbsp;video for Big Talk, the actor's collab with Manchester producer duo&nbsp;Solardo.In the video, Idris is the charismatic host of&nbsp;BIG TALK, broadcasting live on lo-fi cams from a basement studio. As Solardo and two girls man the phones, he is delivering an evangelistic sermon for the financially interested - and his financial advice is entirely based around the mysterious substance of Ambergris - the unique form of waste product created by whales that can be used in making perfume.[imgtoken data:1]Medina employs some familiar devices of the shopping channel aesthetic, camerawork, stock footage, in-camera FX and titles - merging with 80s/90s&nbsp;music video greenscreen FX.&nbsp;But within the visual fun, there is something rather more serious going on. The insidiousness of the host and his message is where Idris comes into his own, enabling him to get his teeth into the character.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As Jamie-James Medina explained in his treatment for the video: "Idris is the host of BIG TALK - a little show about BIG ideas. He produces a weekly sermon for the financially interested. He is part financial advisor, part spiritual guru. And all hustler. Beneath the views on the day’s business news, our host is operating a surreal and dangerous game of deception.[imgtoken data:2]"On this broadcast, he seems to only be interested in one very specific natural resource: ambergris aka whale vomit. In its purest form, the intestinal slurry can be found bobbing through the ocean, where it slowly hardens under the sun. Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, described the smell of whale’s vomit as 'a faint stream of perfume.'&nbsp;It is this stream — the crystalized ambergris — that washes ashore and has become a highly coveted perfume ingredient, used to fix scent to skin. Indeed, a group of fishermen in Yemen stumbled upon a small chunk of the stuff in the belly of a dead whale in 2021, which they sold for $1.5 million."Our host looks into the camera and says, 'If you’re ready to storm the beaches in search of AMBERGRIS, then I have a deal for you! The full spectrum of human emotion is on display in a small photobooth, in&nbsp;Sayna Fardaraghi's evocative promo for Tom Grennan.&nbsp;The video for Grennan's Here sees the pop star as a DIY handyman, fixing and sorting out an aging photobooth, as a variety of different characters enter and exit, each with their own stories and purpose.[imgtoken data:1]There are romantic couples, friends, strangers, self-conscious prom queens, robbers...&nbsp;each taking centre stage in their own stylised vignettes.&nbsp;With energy and emotion packed into the concept - all tied together by several quickfire montages of still images, which expand upon the characters - this is an impressive&nbsp;debut pop video by Sayna Fardaraghi, who recently signed to Forever.[imgtoken data:2]"I've always wanted to create an intimate connection between complete strangers through shared memories, moments and experiences," says&nbsp;Fardaraghi. "A&nbsp;photobooth became the perfect&nbsp;microcosm&nbsp;for that for me. It's that ephemeral moment that we've all had at some point in our lives, and bringing that to the screen accompanied by Tom's incredible song, his energy and the array of featured talent has been a pleasure to work with.&nbsp;"I couldn't have asked for a better array of talent and crew to bring this to life.&nbsp;It brought so many folks together and was packed with beautiful on-camera surprises.[imgtoken data:4]"When I spoke to Tom we discussed how it should be a range of scenarios and emotions that are more&nbsp;real&nbsp;than fictional, exploring more dark moments and not just all light and frivolous. I went through the scenarios I had in mind and made sure they're&nbsp;all at some point relatable and 'real life'&nbsp;than pure fiction and otherworldly."One of my favourite parts came when discussing the development of the peak of the song with my DOP Charlie Knight. We spoke about how integral the photobooth&nbsp;flash needed&nbsp;to be, and went through a series of tests with different bulbs to find the perfect one&nbsp; - I&nbsp;mean perfect colour, brightness intensity, flash size, etc. My goodness was it so worth it!&nbsp;[imgtoken data:5]"The trickiest part was the peak of the song and aligning the images as closely as possible. If you freeze on the hands you'll find that the next frame matches it as closely as possible, but still shows a different moment frozen in time. This took a long while to perfect, but truly has paid off and is such an integral part of the music video. Big thanks to Toby Heard our editor who was a dream to work with!"

Jamie-James Medina has created a lockdown video for Mark Ronson, sourced from his fans all over the world, all shot on the same night.Quarantine conditions has prompted Ronson to cover Richard and Linda Thompson's folk classic&nbsp;I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight - a song that crystallises that desperate desire to have a night out, meet people, and go a bit crazy. A song he has also dedicated to two great New York music producers lost to the pandemic, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Harrell" target="_blank">Andre Harrell</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Willner" target="_blank">Hal Willner</a>.With Raissa on vocals, Ronson requested fans from all over the world to send footage of themselves in lockdown on one night, April 24th.&nbsp;Jamie-James Medina has worked with editor Spencer Campbell in bringing that footage together with self-shot material of Raissa, to create a poignant reflection of the situation created by Covid-19.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;MARK RONSON:"In the first few weeks, one song I couldn’t stop listening to was 'I want to see the bright lights tonight' by Richard &amp; Linda Thompson. For me, it’s the ultimate song about a messy weekend night out. All the weird but wonderful human interactions that go down. Not knowing what might happen once you head out that front door. Maybe a little hookup, a good time, even a hint of danger. But whatever it is, you know you’re going to forget about the boredom and stresses of everyday life for a few hours."I imagine the reason I’ve been so drawn to this song is because I miss that all very much, I bet a lot of us do. I suddenly had this idea to cover the tune and hopefully make a video by asking you all to send in pics and vids of your cities at night."I told this idea to Raissa, one of my favourite new artists. She had never heard the song before but loved it and within hours sent me back an incredible vocal that brought a freshness to the tune I hadn’t imagined. And then the your footage started to come in, and it was beyond anything we could have hoped for. So much emotional depth, humanity, humour, love and universality. Jamie-James Medina took all that and was able to make maybe one of my favourite videos I’ve ever been involved with. Dedicated to Andre Harrell, Hal Willner, and all the bright lights who shone."

How do you handle the force of nature that is Sigrid? Davo McConville asks the people behind the video for her latest banger, Sucker Punch, filmed over two very busy days in various South London locations in September.With endless invention, ambition and Gallic refusal to accept ‘no’ for an answer, AB/CD/CD (Clément Dozier and Camille Dauteuille) create music videos that layer&nbsp;dizzying combinations of practical effects and setups with graphics, animation and camera movements, and add value beyond the number on the budget.&nbsp;A perfect match, then, for 22 year old Norwegian singer Sigrid. The video for&nbsp;Sucker Punch&nbsp;brings as much moxie and confidence to bear as does Sigrid herself, her upfront self-possession evident from her to-camera opening shot.&nbsp;Sucker Punch&nbsp;sees AB/CD/CD flexing their match-cut skills, choreographing dancing with timed pyro, and sudden light-switch changes from day to night.Amidst wrapped-up sports cars hinting at the swag beneath, hordes of dancing ghosts and a marching band in pursuit, Sigrid’s swagger is undiminished.&nbsp;She rules her world, stomping on a pile of dead computers, a piano and a sportswear in succession. And then near the end, the world transforms into an animated wonderland for good measure. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uHt2LrCSWg" target="_blank">The video</a> is a 3.28 jolt that leaves you spinning.&nbsp;We spoke with Camille and Clément, and producer&nbsp;Ailsa Vanessa Tapping and Forever EP Sasha Nixon, to find out more about working with the youth of 2018, stopping time, and causing trouble as teenage stoners.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;<blockquote>We wanted to mix styles here and show Sigrid in many different ways. - AB/CD/CD (above, seated) with choreographer Simon Donnellon&nbsp;(far left) and producer Ailsa Vanessa Tapping</blockquote>Were there any images the track instantly put in your head?AB/CD/CD: For us there was something quite obvious. The track and the idea of a sucker punch itself is quite visual already. And then the intensity of the track…&nbsp;Sigrid’s interaction with the camera is very strong.AB/CD/CD: Yeah, there was no precise image, but her, an environment and the idea that it changes&nbsp;instantly.&nbsp;Were there any technical puzzles to solve for the video?AB/CD/CD: As we go, we tend to go less technical to feel more free and for the artist to feel more free as well. Less technical = more human. We still make things that look quite technical, but we’re pushing for the human factors to take more and more space in it.This one was more of a logistics puzzle. When you need a shot to start at daytime and jump into night time instantly, there’s nothing you can ask the sun to help you unfortunately!We were so pressed for time that we had to improvise a choreography [on the explosion scene] with the pyro, and the camera moves. It was so impressive on set, and sort of dangerous with the handheld camera. LOTS of adrenaline there…[imgtoken data:2]Sasha Nixon: The fireworks setup took longest. We only had about 7 goes to get it right before the budget was ‘exploded’ - lol. So no rehearsing, just going for it each time.Ailsa Tapping: There was, however, a pretty funny language barrier when discussing explosions for this one though!How would you describe your working relationship with ABCDCD?Ailsa: A whirlwind! This video was turned around in record time, with constantly altering creatives to take into account. The guys are really precise and clear with what they want, so it was just a matter of racing against the clock to lock everything in place.&nbsp;Did you learn anything on this video?AB/CD/CD: That we can shoot everything with a 12mm lens and IT LOOKS PRETTY GREAT ACTUALLY.[imgtoken data:3]<blockquote>Rob Witt (above left) did an amazing job, taking time to understand exactly what we wanted to achieve. And he brings his great 12mm lens…</blockquote>Do you enjoy shooting in London?Yes, the locations look great, and we love the atmosphere as much as we love English cinema. It’s very inspiring. And London is the centre of the music business and it’s still very strong creatively.Was there a particular reference for the animated sections near the end of the video?We wanted to mix styles here and show Sigrid in many different ways. We hope that it’s a section the fans can relate to. It gives a bit more intimacy with Sigrid and is playful with her character.&nbsp;But you know, we’re coming from graphic design and post production so animation feels really natural to us.Sigrid’s first single came out when she was 17. What were you doing at 17?Camille (ABCDCD): Drinking beers and smoking pot while listening to metal&nbsp;and watching MTV basically. It’s funny you ask that because we had the exact same thoughts while working with Sigrid seeing how professional she is comparing to us back in those days!Clement&nbsp;(ABCDCD): I was studying maths in the countryside, trying to save money to go to the US while playing with my DV camera. Looking back at it, it feels really far from anything! :) &nbsp;[imgtoken data:4]And did you enjoy collaborating with someone so young?AB/CD/CD: We like shooting with young people and even kids, they’re really fun and genuine when they feel safe. But with Sigrid it was obviously something else. I don’t know what part her age is playing in that, but she was focused and enthusiastic where others are blasé and tired I'd say.I think it might be hard to tell as an outsider, but there are lots of little Easter eggs hidden in tribute to Norway - can you tell us more?Sigrid asked us from the start bring some Norwegian touches into the film. For us Norway is first and foremost known as black metal country (but I guess it doesn’t fit with her, haha). She had lot of good ideas but it wasn’t always easy to accommodate them actually, as they were mainly related to architecture, landscape or “Bunard” (Norwegian traditional costume), it wasn’t really possible in London and in our scenarios.Then she came up with her favourite taco brand from Norway which has some cool packaging. She loves tacos, so we decided to play with that. Why not building a wall of Norwegian tacos ? Then she agreed to jump through it. Great! Hopefully we’ll be able to taste some of them soon ;)[imgtoken data:5]How big a problem was the taco boxes continually falling down?Ailsa: It was a edge of your seat, nail biting moment! We were really up against it with our&nbsp;schedule, and had decided to shoot this last as there was a fear that it was simply not going to work! The taco tower had been set up and was sitting there for a good 30 minutes without any issues, and then the&nbsp;moment we went to shoot it - they all fell down (I think it was due to the string and sellotape contraption getting too hot under the lights!) So we had to manically set it up again before shooting it. Second time lucky!What do you love about the mad, mad world of music videos, as a producer?Ailsa: Bear with me because this sounds corny, but it's totally true.&nbsp;There's something about the intensity of pulling together logistics that makes you feel so fulfilled. And the people who share that journey with you often become lifetime collaborators. I start pre-production having never met some of the crew before, and we leave as great friends. It's amazing what a combination of creativity and stress manufactures.[imgtoken data:6]Rob Witt is a phenomenal DOP, well-versed in big budget music videos –&nbsp;how did you tempt him over from Los Angeles?AB/CD/CD:&nbsp;Rob is a good friend actually, he was hanging around in Paris for a wedding, so we just hooked him on his way back to L.A. He did an amazing job on this film, taking time to understand exactly what we wanted to achieve,&nbsp;and how he could do the all we planned with the little time we had. And he brings his great 12mm lens…Ailsa:&nbsp;We also had the incredible Emma Rose Mead&nbsp;designing this for us, which made it even funnier as she and Rob are neighbours in LA!Budgets can be tough on a production. What would you have done with £100k more?AB/CD/CD: Off to the Caribbean!? Haha. No I guess it’s hard to say, we really enjoy the film as it is now. I mean the budget constraints are a part of the process and it all leads creativity somehow. And thinking about it, it’s actually less about money than time. More time would have been good to go further into each scene and element. Sigrid teleports between daytime reality and nighttime craziness -&nbsp;featuring&nbsp;rollerskating ghosts, a party-riot, and escaping from a marching band in a supermarket - in French directing duo AB/CD/CD's&nbsp;effervescent, vibrantly&nbsp;inventive&nbsp;video for Sucker Punch.The directors - that's Camille Dauteuille and Clément Dozier - were inspired by the eclectic nature of Sucker Punch to dispatch Sigrid into a series of mad adventures when daylight literally switches off. And then, with more brilliantly executed&nbsp;transitions, she gets thrown into her next daytime scene.While DoP Rob Witt's superb photography makes&nbsp;her larger than life,&nbsp;the art direction involved bringing in some distinctly&nbsp;Norwegian features to give Sigrid a taste of her homeland - like jumping through her own-branded taco boxes to escape that marching band. And it culminates in a swirl of tiny vignettes where she&nbsp;actually throws punches and turns into two animated avatars - including a seriously powerful 'anime' Sigrid. Phoenix&#39;s new video is an irreverent reworking of cultural history&nbsp;by Chris Hopkins at Melbourne-based design and directing team Lost Art, where the band become an integral part&nbsp;of a rare&nbsp;&#39;80s documentary about legendary and controversial fashion photographer Helmut Newton.The band are seamlessly inserted into Newton&#39;s jetsetting &#39;80s lifestyle, including casting sessions, fashion shoots, driving around Hollywood, and at an exhibition featuring giant prints of the photographer&#39;s famous statuesque nudes.
