In theory, editors have been able to work pretty much as normal during the lockdown. So we asked a quartet&nbsp;of Cut+Run London's finest - above from left, Jamie O'Donnell, Meg Thorne, Nick Armstrong and Sam Bould - how they have adapted to WFH.Has the patience required for their exacting craft been taxed to the limit by demanding family members, as opposed to, er, lovely directors?&nbsp;NICK ARMSTRONG:Nick, the editor of videos in the past year for Easy Life, Two Door Cinema Club and Baxter Dury, says that the lockdown has given him some quality time with his two young children he may have&nbsp;otherwise missed. But then again... "getting in [to Cut+Run in Wardour Street] before everyone else with an overpriced coffee and having 30 mins all to myself... that feels incredibly priceless now.”&nbsp;<blockquote>Kids Cosmic Yoga is more fun then bundling onto the Bakerloo line.&nbsp;</blockquote>How has lockdown affected how you do your work? I would like to say it has massively affected the way I work, but the first joke I saw online was two identical pictures of an editor working - one labelled ‘before self isolation,’ and the other one labelled ‘after self isolation’.It reminds me of working on location in a remote set up in a hotel somewhere, with the Ocado delivery man replacing the room service, but with your own bed at the end of the day. We’ve even managed to maintain our Cut+Run Friday afternoon drinks (in more exotic locations then Wardour Street) which is an important tradition.What have you learned about yourself during quarantine? That good coffee is the most important thing I need in quarantine. I went through several different&nbsp;beans before settling on the East Blend&nbsp;from Nude Espresso. Oh and I'm as competitive&nbsp;at getting Ocado delivery slots as I am at getting Glastonbury tickets.What's the favourite part of your daily routine? Kids Cosmic Yoga with&nbsp;my three year old in the morning before I start working. It's more fun then bundling onto the Bakerloo line.Best meal you have eaten/are regularly cooking (send photo, if poss!) My wife has been getting creative with the&nbsp;kids afternoon fruit. &nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Best thing you’ve watched, or heard, while on lockdown, and why?&nbsp; The best thing I've listened to has been&nbsp;revisiting&nbsp;classic albums with <a href="https://timstwitterlisteningparty.com/" target="_blank">Tim Burgess' Twitter Listening Parties</a>&nbsp;#TimsTwitterListeningParty.At a designated time you collectively press play on an album and listen to it in full whilst the band, producer and even the album artwork&nbsp;designer share stories of the recording and making of it. [Kevin Godley was Tim's guest on May 21st, talking about his band 10cc's third album The Original Soundtrack,&nbsp;which includes&nbsp;I'm Not In Love - ed]. During this period there is real comfort in dusting off the vinyl and listening to music you already know with the added community aspect of listening together with other fans.What positives can we take from the situation (if any) and build upon? We’re learning how important certain media is in getting people through this - not NHS-level important, but still of value in these long, locked-down days. Gratitude is possibly one of the greatest positives we can take away from this. We work in an amazing industry that never really feels like work - some of us are lucky enough to be able to do it wherever we are.SAM BOULD:Once he had cleared out the spare room of accumulated junk,&nbsp;"forcing us to actually tidy up for once”,&nbsp;Sam was ready to work. He has missed the human contact of directors like regular collaborators The Sacred Egg - he's edited all their videos, including last year's one for CamelPhat&nbsp;-&nbsp;but it's enabled him to learn The Gruffalo off by heart.&nbsp;<blockquote>Dealing with the pandemic is a bit like a breakup.&nbsp;You start in denial...&nbsp;</blockquote>How has lockdown affected how you do your work? To be honest, I’ve become quite used to working like this.&nbsp;In the last few years I have spent as much time out of the edit suite, working from a laptop on set and sending cuts remotely, as I have in the suite with a room full of clients.You obviously miss that collaboration with a director which does work a lot better when you are in the room together. But it’s so easy to connect these days with tools like Zoom and evercast so that collaboration isn’t totally lost.&nbsp;What's the favourite part of your daily routine? It’s probably the 12th or 14th recital of The Gruffalo. I can do it entirely from memory now “A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood, a fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good...”Best meal you have eaten/are regularly cooking (send photo, if poss!) The thing I have been missing the most are the restaurants in Soho. In an attempt to recreate an authentic edit suite dining experience we made our own chicken katsu curry.[imgtoken data:2]Are things getting harder?&nbsp; Dealing with the pandemic is a bit like a breakup. You start in denial, then sadness sets in, next you get to anger, then a little bit more sadness. I’ve just moved on to acceptance. Ridding myself of all emotions seems to have helped.Best thing you’ve watched, or heard, while on lockdown, and why? We’ve been enjoying lots and lots of&nbsp;Veep.&nbsp;Watching politicians make catastrophic mistakes is a lot funnier when it’s fictional.[vidtoken data:0]What positives can we take from the situation,&nbsp;and build upon? Everyone is being forced to think very creatively to come up with solutions to the simplest of problems, hopefully when this is all over our brains will all be so finely tuned that making a music video will seem like a walk in the park.JAMIE O'DONNELL:Lockdown came just after a house move for Jamie, so for the first few weeks&nbsp;his spare time&nbsp;"consisted of unpacking boxes, assembling furniture and settling into a new environment!” Now things have settled down, he's coming to terms with the new normal. It's not so easy - but then there's that treat on Saturday night. Vegetarians look away now...&nbsp;<blockquote>Saturday nights rock!&nbsp;&nbsp;</blockquote>What have you learned about yourself during quarantine?&nbsp; I have discovered that I'm at my best when I am occupied and kept out of trouble!Best thing you’ve watched, or heard, while on lockdown, and why? And the worst…?&nbsp; I have been watching way too much Netflix! The best thing I&nbsp;watched was Unorthodox. It's a world I know little of and I though both the script and acting were really strong.[vidtoken data:1]&nbsp;The worst for me was Hollywood. I thought it looked great, but for me it felt self-indulgent and the mix of real and fictional just ended up annoying me. That being said, I did watch the entire thing! lolAre things getting harder/better/staying the same?&nbsp; Things are definitely getting harder. My partner and I moved into our new house days before lockdown started and at the time I was also working full time from my home office. As time has gone on we have finished unpacking and the job I was working on has slowly wound down, resulting in the days starting to feel longer and longer.&nbsp; &nbsp;Best meal you have eaten/are regularly cooking (send photo, if poss!)&nbsp; Saturdays have now become steak night. Steak, real chips, homemade onion rings,&nbsp;grilled tomato and chimichurri. And an amazing bottle of red (or two). After all, she took on the tricky task of editing three episodes&nbsp;of Natalie Steiner's must-see film series for Promonews, Music Videos In Lockdown -&nbsp; <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/interviews/music-videos-lockdown-episode-4-wonderings-and-worries-exclusive-promonews/64893" target="_blank">Episode 4:&nbsp;Wonderings And Worries dropped this week</a>&nbsp;- and&nbsp;has done&nbsp;a brilliant job. She has also managed to lead a very balanced life in lockdown -&nbsp;but still hankers for a few things about her suite at Cut+Run.&nbsp;<blockquote>I miss a proper chair and big monitor.</blockquote>What's the most surprising, or least predictable thing, that's happened to you&nbsp;during quarantine?&nbsp; Exercise!&nbsp; I've been walking and running so much more than I used to. Having more time because of no commuting is definitely&nbsp;helping with that. Also because I start going&nbsp;a bit mad trapped in my flat I love going outside for a long walk and fresh air.What's the favourite part of your daily routine?&nbsp; Waking up and enjoying my morning coffee in bed. It's nice not having to rush in the morning to catch a train! My husband works a&nbsp;lot with teams in Germany, so he has to be&nbsp;up earlier for Zoom calls etc, which means we're both up at 7am, so I'm thankful for that! I think I'd feel sluggish if I stayed in bed until midday.Are things getting harder/better/staying the same?&nbsp; A real mix. Extra time from no commuting is great. I've also managed to get better wifi although it took me about three&nbsp;weeks to get through to Virgin to organise! I miss a proper chair and big monitor though.What have you learned about yourself during quarantine?&nbsp; The importance of being healthy and exercising. I've had more time to focus on me over the past couple of months and it's really paying off.Best meal you have eaten/are regularly cooking? I hate to say&nbsp;I've become really cliché&nbsp;and got into making banana&nbsp;bread. It's with oats and almond flour instead of normal flour and sugar though - so at least it's healthier!&nbsp;We’ve also been experimenting a lot with our new Ooni pizza oven, making pizzas, chicken wings, steak and Padron peppers.[imgtoken data:4]Best thing you’ve watched, or heard, while on lockdown, and why? And the&nbsp;worst...?&nbsp; I read&nbsp;Normal People&nbsp;and wasn't that into the book, but now I'm now watching the TV series and I'm hooked.&nbsp;It's beautifully shot too!Also from working on the&nbsp;Music Videos In Lockdown&nbsp;interviews, Jax Harney pointed out that she's going through the imDb top 250. So we're slowly looking at that too. I watched&nbsp;Memento&nbsp;for the first time the other day. Mind blowing![vidtoken data:2]The worst thing I watched was&nbsp;Too Hot To Handle&nbsp;on Netflix. I'm&nbsp;embarrassed I even watched it.... Shouldn't have even told you!What positives can we take from the situation (if any) and build upon? Patience is a big one. I think our industry has become incredibly demanding. Identical twins choose similar paths towards oblivion, in this Shakespearean family drama for British DJ-producer duo&nbsp;Camelphat.After saying goodbye to one another at a funeral, the brothers look for adoration in different places: one becomes a rockstar, the other becomes the leader of a cult. Through their search for control, they both spiral into self-destruction. They meet twice again. The first time, at the top of their game, they argue. But the second time, they meet under much graver&nbsp;circumstances.&nbsp;Charley Palmer Roe - who you may recognise as the spooky supporting character in absolutely everything - gives an alarming performance as both twins. The similarities between their separate lives are impressively realised with analogous compositions and match-cutting. The visual conceit drives the narrative, and there is exceptional work here by DoP Dustin Lane - shooting monochrome, as he did to award-winning effect for&nbsp;Alt-J’s Mexican epic <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/04/18/alt-j-3ww-young-replicant/47388">3WW</a>&nbsp;- and the director's regular editing collaborator Sam Bould.&nbsp;The Sacred Egg are still fairly fresh from their roles as second unit directors for Bohemian Rhapsody, and you can draw certain parallels between the Mercury biopic and this more insidious story. The duo are savvy enough to show us only a glimpse of this world before the video ends, leaving you curious. Who was the father of these men? Why were they drawn to take these paths and do the things they did?

CamelPhat ft Jake Bugg 'Be Someone' by The Sacred Egg

A motion-capture performer strays too far from the axis of reality, in this visceral mind-bender for Ed Sheehan by Ryan Staake.Dancer Courtney Scarr treats us to a show-stopping routine in a MoCap studio, and on screen, her movements carry through to a shimmering, shifting CG universe. Travelling between these fantasies and the reality of the studio, Scarr assumes different identities -&nbsp;including 3D avatars of Ed Sheeran and Chance the Rapper. But when it’s time for her to hang up her bodysuit and call it a day, she finds it hard to leave this oscillating fantasy behind…The video is a remarkable achievement for Moving Picture Company, who were tasked with turning round the entire project in just three and a half weeks. MPC is obviously a global leader in VFX, but this required all kinds of&nbsp;ingenious improvisation to make it happen. For example, when Sheeran was not available for a photogrammetry, Dominic Alderson created&nbsp;his 3D avatar from his Madame Tussauds waxwork. More of this iintricate process is revealed in a <a href="https://vimeo.com/344754319">Behind the Scenes</a> video.&nbsp;While this is a masterclass in visual effects, a mention should go&nbsp;to Scarr and her choreographer&nbsp;Erin Murray. The confident swagger of their dance routine anchors this video in&nbsp;reality, and holds the audience's hand through the rapid&nbsp;shifts and glitches&nbsp;of this digital fantasia.[imgtoken data:1]

CC Wade have created a spectacular Genet-inspired video for Fat White Family: a homoerotic love tragedy set on the battlefield.&nbsp;The directing duo have collaborated once again with Francesca Di Mottola - winner of the award for Best Production Design at last year&#39;s UKMVAs for the directors&#39; video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2018/09/07/king-krule-biscuit-town-cc-wade/54898">King Krule&#39;s Biscuit Town</a>&nbsp;- to create a complete cinematic world in the studio that would not look out of place in a Powell &amp; Pressburger classic. The long, climactic battle scene, in particular, is a triumph of old-school filmmaking craft.&nbsp;With the label version of the video for Feet released back in January, this version is the Directors Cut - what CC Wade consider the finished video. And it&#39;s a joy to behold.

As George Ezra paces around his bedroom, water seeps under the door - and soon the room is quickly filling up with water. It&#39;s a startling and gripping scenario for the video for Hold My Girl, directed by Dave Bullivant, aka Bison.It&#39;s certainly not the easy-going and uplifting vibe that we usually get from the usual George Ezra music video, but it fits with the tone of the song, which gives the sense of a man who&#39;s time is quickly running out. And that&#39;s exactly what&#39;s happening before our eyes in the video.By all accounts, this was a very difficult shoot to pull off. So if that look on George&#39;s face, as the room inexorably fills with water, looks like genuine fear... well, it just might be.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

But Pullin&#39;s video defies expectations, and ends up showing him&nbsp;in a far more impressive light.Laced through with a rollicking performance in a working men&#39;s club, it eventually pulls the narrative and performance together, and then delivers the valuable message that John&nbsp;Newman does not need to fight to win.

The Sacred Egg&#39;s video&nbsp;for this Carnage track &ndash; a collab with Steve Aoki featuring Lockdown &ndash; is an awesome clash of the classical and the modern. It&#39;s&nbsp;a Renaissance tableau of little cherubs, who happen to be tattooed like LA gangsters, and engaged in mortal combat with each other.Most of the turbulent power of the piece&nbsp;emanates from the setting and the young characters&#39; aggressive facial expressions (although there is one moment of stomach-churning violence). The action is slowed almost to a standstill, so this really is like a series of classical portraits, like you&#39;ve never seen before.

Some dark and atmospheric, some lonely and melancholic, others vibrant and over the top. It turns out to be the set of a horror movie.&quot;The idea for Terrified came from wanting to create a simple and atmospheric video, which deviates from the songs lyric by rooting it on a horror film shoot,&quot; says Hall. &quot;This set the backdrop for Isaac to channel the emotions within the song, creating a surreal reality.&quot;

Sam Bould has spent his career editing music videos and commercials at Big Chop and now Cut+Run London, which he joined earlier this year.&nbsp;Sam has cut promos for the likes of Arcade Fire, Royal Blood and Ty Dolla $ign, among others - earning himself a UKMVA nomination for best editing in the process.Before this week&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/uk-music-video-awards-cutrun-present-deep-cuts-tickets-39735153915" target="_blank">Deep Cuts, the music video editing panel</a>&nbsp;presented by <a href="http://ukmva.com/" target="_blank">the UKMVAs</a> and <a href="http://cutandrun.com/" target="_blank">Cut+Run</a>, we caught up with Sam - one of the panellists &ndash; to ask him about his career in music videos, how editing skate videos&nbsp;helped him find his feet, and some of his golden rules for music video editing.Promonews: To begin with, can you tell us a little bit about how you got into being an editor?Sam Bould: I knew fairly early on that was what I wanted to do. My dad was a director and he would often take me to work with him when I was a kid. Going on set was exciting, but I always found the edit suite much more interesting. Watching the editor Craig Dwyer pull together all these different elements to make something coherent and entertaining was so impressive and satisfying.&nbsp; So as soon as I was out of school I went out handing CVs to every edit house in Soho. I eventually got a job as a runner and worked my way up from there.<blockquote>&quot;As soon as I&nbsp;was out of school I went out handing CVs to every edit house in Soho&quot; - Sam Bould, editor</blockquote>Do you think your early experience cutting together skate films with your friends had any lasting influence on your work within music videos?My first experience of actually editing was with skate videos when I was a teenager. They are quite similar to cutting music videos in a way as they are often very musically-led edits. Making the visuals and the music marry up to create the greatest impact is just as important in both mediums. I hope my technique has evolved a bit since then as I used to use a lot of cross dissolves which I absolutely hate now!How do you approach an edit with a director? Is it the same whether working with a long-time collaborator like The Sacred Egg, or somebody totally new?Always the same. I spend the first day or so of the edit familiarising myself with&nbsp;the rushes and building my first edit as I go. I try not to overthink my first cut&nbsp;too much and focus more on what feels right, this acts as a good jumping-off&nbsp;point from which to refine and refine. What is it about music videos that keeps you coming back for more?Music videos feel like cultural artefacts to me, little bits of history that show the culture of the time. I used to watch MTV constantly and there would always be a buzz around a new video coming out. It felt unimaginable that I might end up actually cutting music videos so to still be doing it now feels a bit like living a dream. It&rsquo;s exciting to help create something that so many people connect with.In your opinion, what are the golden rules or principles to consider when editing a music video? (or aren&rsquo;t there any?)Each project comes with its own set of challenges so it&rsquo;s difficult to stick to a set of rules. Editing is all about pacing, you don&rsquo;t need to cut to the music necessarily, rather when you&rsquo;ve taken in everything that you need to from a certain shot that&rsquo;s when it&rsquo;s time to move on to the next one. Conversely, it&rsquo;s easy to make something overly cutty, if you can tell the same story with one shot as you can with two it&rsquo;s often best to go with the simpler option. How important do you feel events like this are for the industry, and what do you hope to take away from it?Editing can often be a solitary experience and your sphere of influence can be quite narrow, it&rsquo;s great to get out there and broaden your horizons and these kind of events are great for meeting new people with different ways of thinking.
