AG Rojas has created the first ever official music video for jazz legend John Coltrane’s spiritual masterpiece - one of the most important and influential jazz records ever made -&nbsp;by returning to the hallowed studio where it was recorded in 1964.Created in honour of the centenary of Coltrane's birth, Rojas's video for Acknowlegement, the opening and most iconic movement of the album-length suite A Love Supreme,&nbsp;was filmed at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.&nbsp;But rather than reconstruct the magical recording&nbsp;with musicians or actors, Rojas turns the space itself into the main character of the film. It becomes the foundation from which&nbsp;the viewer's imagination can run free as Coltrane's divine&nbsp;music plays.It's an audacious approach, but by focussing on the details, with&nbsp;superb black and white cinematography from Shawn Peters, Rojas's underlines&nbsp;the majesty and beauty of Coltane's&nbsp;recording by&nbsp;capturing the studio's unique&nbsp;character.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“When I arrived at Van Gelder Studio for the first time on a May morning, there were no words, just a shared, awestruck look between my friend and collaborator&nbsp;Shawn&nbsp;Peters&nbsp;and me," explains Rojas."The studio is hidden down a long, tree-lined driveway, flanked now by two nondescript office buildings. You feel the space before you see it. But when you step into the studio, you are immediately welcomed into a world that honours nature as well as nature’s sacred geometry. Along with some recording gear,instruments, and ephemera that transport you through time."For the film, we attempted to imagine what that December night in 1964 may have felt like as John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison&nbsp;and Elvin Jones recorded&nbsp;A Love Supreme. Not exactly what it&nbsp;looked&nbsp;like (though a lot of the original recording equipment remains), but something more like the spiritual residue of their presence and sound.&nbsp;"I grew up playing saxophone in jazz bands, so the concepts of improvisation and collaboration are familiar to me (and crucial when it comes to filmmaking). That is how our cinematographer&nbsp;Shawn; our production designer&nbsp;Emmeline E. Wilks Dupoise; my producer&nbsp;Grace Campos&nbsp;and our crew approached the day. We listened to music, laughed, broke bread, and improvised with a 16mm camera&nbsp;all day and night in this very special place: together.”

A grotesque tableau unfolds between two young women, a car&nbsp;and a rope - blurring the line between allegory and violence - in&nbsp;Casper Balslev's latest video for&nbsp;genre-bending Nordic trio 802.In contrast to Balslev-directed short films that accompanied the band's previous releases, 1986 Forever and the&nbsp;UK Music Video Award-nominated A Heavy Metal Bedtime Story, the visual for H.I.T.S. is a short sharp shock: an unsettling scenario of stark symbolism, delivered with a cinematic punch, in under two minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The video deepens the song’s core tension: the eternal clash between good and evil - tautly delivered by Balslev's direction, with gritty cinematography by&nbsp;Sebastian Wintherø. Casper Balslev directs a superb origin story&nbsp;for Danish metal band 802, where it's&nbsp;1986 Forever: a&nbsp;short film, that tells the tale of small town losers Andreas Asingh and Emil Sorensen's long journey to rock 'n roll glory.1986 Forever is a&nbsp;follow-up to Casper Balslev's marvellous&nbsp;<a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2023/03/09/802-heavy-metal-bedtime-story-casper-balslev/80648" target="_blank">A Heavy Metal Bedroom Story</a>, released last year, featuring the band's debut single My Girl - a deadpan black comedy about to goth-obsessed girls who find each other. And it's&nbsp;a more ambitious proposition, as we are treated to a&nbsp;mythic story of the band's early struggles, back in 1986, packed with comedy, violence and a hallucinatory trip to Tenerife. &nbsp;The main thrust is Andreas and Emil's long search for the bass player of their dreams - achieved when they find Kasper Holbaek in Tenerife - followed by their eventual progress to the recording studio and a dangerous encounter with a psychopathic label boss.Balslev masterfully maneuvres&nbsp;the&nbsp;story with considerable skill and, bolstered by excellent performances across the board, and excellent period detail in both art direction and DoP Tobias Scavenius's 80s-esque cinematography.The official video for 802's track 1986, comprised of a cutdown section of this full-length short film,&nbsp;was released earlier this year.&nbsp;But this actually feels like it has the potential of being a full length movie, like&nbsp;Kneecap. The “making of” video was on TV&nbsp;on some network. I was in high school. My cousin and I happened to stumble upon it late night on a school night. I think the process was so new and so interesting to us. We decided to make a short that same week with zero knowledge whatsoever.Also every film I’ve ever watched has influenced me whether I liked them or not - but some have had a special place in my mind and heart over the years.&nbsp;[vidtoken data:2]<blockquote>The Take Your Time video... pushed me and felt rewarding throughout the process.</blockquote>In terms of&nbsp;music video-related jobs of the past year or so - what was the most rewarding creatively, and why?I don’t feel fully rewarded yet. I am feeling like I am in a transition phase creatively so I think the creative reward is right around the corner!Everything I’ve done has felt good more recently and has fulfilled me in certain ways. The Take Your Time video with Sasha Keable and 6lack has creatively pushed me recently and has felt rewarding throughout the process till the end.&nbsp;It’s a project I’m genuinely proud of and love the new—land team for fully supporting it and backing this one and Sasha’s team for collaborating to create such a great video.What are your favourite other (non-mv) projects of the past year or so?I did a cover photoshoot for Elsa Majimbo for OkayAfrica. This has been my favourite project outside of the video work. The shoot itself was very beautiful. The location, the energy, the styling looks, hair. I loved that process so much. And plus it was an honour shooting an East African legend, considering I am East African myself. It felt truly authentic and fun.[imgtoken data:1]What’s the most surprising thing that’s happened this year? Finding the new—land family and getting our first project on the board. Working with Sasha and 6lack! Being back home in Seattle with my family most of this year. Starting a company with my friends called neo-neo.I think leaving LA for a significant amount of time has been another surprising thing. I’ve lived here almost five straight years now without really leaving much unless it was for work. But I’ve recently been out of LA a lot. Also going to Umrah in Mecca (Islamic pilgrimage) this past year with my mom and family was surprising and AMAZING. A very cleansing experience.<blockquote>Each year some of the best music videos come out and the crews are doing it for nothing - you can feel pure energy and creativity oozing out.</blockquote>Most annoying/irksome thing that’s been going on this year (work-related or otherwise)? The most genuinely disappointing and annoying thing I’ve witnessed this year has been finding out so many people I know are in support of genocide. I know directors, producers, and others that’d repost terrible things this time last year. I remember adult professionals reposting “Kill Them All”&nbsp; posts but we won’t speak on that too much. But yeah that’s been annoying to see and quite disappointing.&nbsp;Your top suggestion to change and improve how the music video industry works? Maybe more ethical practices from labels and paying people and production, and having better budgets. That’s a reoccurring issue I’ve seen.&nbsp;I think outside of just money and overall respect for directors and crew, the music video industry is killing it due to the dope creatives. Each year some of the best music videos come out and the crews are doing it for nothing. You can feel the pure energy and creativity oozing out of these videos. It’s genuine.What are you looking forward to most for the rest of the year? More music videos. More work in the U.K. specifically. More projects with friends. More life. Peace and freedom for the peoples of Palestine, Sudan, Congo, and the rest of the world. I also am looking forward to making more time for myself and taking care of myself first. Having already made a big impression at last year's UK Music Video Awards, Maceo Frost's superb video for Zigidi, the lead single from his own musical project with Robin Naziri, finally reaches a wider audience. And it really deserves to be seen.&nbsp;Kurdish/Swedish artist/actor Naziri and director/music producer Frost are collaborating as BIJI, acting as a lens into Kurdish culture through a blend of Kurdish and Western Asian music traditions with other influences, particularly hip hop. It's an audio-visual project which saw the pair travel to the Kurdistan region of Iraq&nbsp;last year to create the pulsating video for Zigidi.[imgtoken data:1]It's a great mix of high-octane, petrolhead-friendly&nbsp;action and social documentary, as Naziri embarks on an improbable mission to deliver the prized BMW of a local boss through the desert 'without a scratch', while recalling flashbacks of conversations with&nbsp;the high elders.&nbsp;Featuring some&nbsp;brilliant stunt driving by Rozh mohammed Al-sheikhani, Maceo Frost handles the combination of action footage and dramatic interludes&nbsp;with great flair&nbsp;and just makes you want to watch it again - and learn more about this fascinating project. The second&nbsp;instalment of Libby Burke Wilde's cinematic project to accompany Cat Burns's debut album rollout places the artist&nbsp;in a busy club.The promo for End Game continues the stripped-back, minimalist approach established in Burke Wilde's video for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2024/04/16/cat-burns-alone-libby-burke-wilde/86135" target="_blank">Alone</a>.&nbsp;As with the previous video it's captured in a single take, Cat performing End Game direct to camera, as other clubgoers swirl around her.&nbsp;The video works in establishing the separateness of Cat Burns, lost in her own thoughts about a struggling relationship, amid an oblivious crowd of revellers - who include India Amarteifio and Sam Reuben.&nbsp;&nbsp;
