Sye Allen's poignant short film The Empty Chair&nbsp;is about the big stuff - loss, grief, reflections upon the life of a loved one. The beauty lies in how he handles this subject matter - it's direct and intimate, and all the more powerful, humane and uplifting&nbsp;as a result.&nbsp;The form of the film is simple and straightforward: the words of a fulsome eulogy to a departed loved one, read by actress Kate Dickie, accompany images of absence, of his regular haunts: the football stand, the church pews, the cinema stalls and pub stool - and his favourite armchair at home.Allen also wrote and produced this labour of love - ably assisted by a small platoon of music video-making veterans, and his production company Burning Reel -&nbsp;and he succeeds in achieving a balance of emotion and believability without spilling too far into sentimentality. There is also a lovely original soundtrack by Nico Casal, accompanying Dickie's performance.Not surprisingly, the pandemic was a big influence on the making of the film - as Sye Allen explains below. Mali-Koa reflects on how easy it is to feel limited by your environment or the people that surround you, in Jess Journo's visual&nbsp;for Dancer.&nbsp;Stripped-back, stark surroundings are the backdrop to the performance, which switches from solo lip-sync shots to six-person, unified dance movements. Koa had never danced in a video before this one, so it is a great tie-in to the themes and limitations expressed in the lyrics.&nbsp;DoP&nbsp;Beatriz Sastre utilises slow, steady camera movement and a limited colour palette to allow the choreography to breathe, and shine against the cold, blue-tinged surroundings.&nbsp;Cutting through boundaries to become the best version of herself, the message at the core of the visual is that when life throws obstacles your way,&nbsp;all you can and must do is dance with it and keep moving forward.

Alexandra Green's video for&nbsp;French musician and producer Oklou is simple, cool, and exquisitely effective.Oklou, dressed in red, sits among black rocks in a blacked-out space, an otherworldly studio set. She performs her Mura Masa-produced song Entertnmnt to camera, as it rotates around her. That's it, more or less.&nbsp;But the contact between her eye and the camera, as it executes a parabola - moving away and then getting closer again as it circles around her&nbsp;- is transfixing.James Rhodes' camerawork is executed so that Oklou is always the centre of attention, while the set -&nbsp;an arrangement of rockery by art director Afra Zamara - is quite&nbsp;intriguing in itself.Overall this is a great example of director and choreographer Ally Green relying on the movement of the camera rather than the subject to grab the viewer's attention.&nbsp;
