Paloma Faith and director David Wilson lament the gentrification of London in brilliantly feisty fashion,&nbsp;in the wonderful&nbsp;promo for Gold.&nbsp;Decked out in a trademark whimsical dress and radiating heaps of&nbsp;energy, Paloma skips and dances down an East London market and into a building site, dangling from an excavator, kicking down doors, and just having a riotous time with some of her fellow, equally colourful&nbsp;residents.&nbsp;Paloma is magnetic as always, the supporting cast - all dancers in the Theo Adams Company - are great too, and DoP&nbsp;David Foulkes matches her energy in sweeping crane shots and fluid camera movement. John Maybury, one of the UK's most venerated music video directors, returns to the medium for the first time in years for the iconic Marianne Faithfull.&nbsp;Maybury, best known for directing the video for Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U, before making films including Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon, has created a dreamlike piece for Faithfull's The Gypsy Faerie Queen, co-penned and featuring Nick Cave. Like the song, it's inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream, with ethereal&nbsp;Super 8mm-shot footage of the Fairy Queen, alternating with close-up footage of a glowingly radiant Faithfull.“It’s a little miracle,”&nbsp;says Marianne Faithfull of the song,&nbsp;the first single from her just-released album&nbsp;Negative Capability - the 21st in a recording career spanning 54 years.&nbsp;“I think it’s one of the loveliest songs we’ve ever written together. It was so great working with Nick again.” And she adds that she and John Maybury discovered they had a connection through a mutual collaborator in filmmaker&nbsp;Derek Jarman."John Maybury told me that the person who really got him into movies was Derek Jarman. Derek even bought him his first camera. Derek Jarman was the person who made the music video for Broken English, which I absolutely love.&nbsp;It was the beginning of MTV, the time when it was all chicks with big tits and long legs and sexy clothes, that’s all that people were interested in. And at the time, nobody really liked our film. It took a long time for people to get it, and it has become sort of a cult artwork now. It’s incredible the way things go in circles. I love that.”

Paloma Faith returns with the first video from her new album The Architect, and the first&nbsp;of a two part collaboration with UKMVA-nominated Thomas James.For Crybaby, we&#39;re thrust into a brutal future society&nbsp;where young boys are drilled and bullied into their expected roles of hard, emotionless domination. A bit like going to an English public school. Paloma&nbsp;is one of the submissive maidens&nbsp;at the institution who develops a protective instinct for one of the more vulnerable boys.Paloma has commented: &ldquo;The lyrics are a conversation between a man and I, and the song questions whether global conflicts would cease to exist if men successfully dealt with their feelings.&nbsp;Would things be resolved without attack and with measured discussion?&rdquo;Thomas James has interpreted the lyrics in&nbsp;his distinctive dark narrative style, and having built the&nbsp;scenario with a series of harrowing scenes - intercut with Paloma&#39;s performance - he ends it on a cliffhanger. In a career that includes many&nbsp;notable music videos, both as a solo artist and in her old band Moloko,&nbsp;Roisin Murphy has taken the plunge and directed the video for her track Exploitation herself.&nbsp;Nominally, it&#39;s set up like the trailer for a movie, which&nbsp;allows for a freeform exploration on the nature of fame and identity, in which&nbsp;Roisin plays as the main&nbsp;character: a&nbsp;middle-age&nbsp;actress in the midst of some kind of breakdown.She confronts the issue head on, delving into a character that appears obsessed with her appearance, aiming to reach the&nbsp;flawless ideal of beauty used to sell products. There&#39;s a blurring of reality&nbsp;and fiction,&nbsp;mirroring&nbsp;the disorientation of the actress as she struggles to maintain her public persona.It&#39;s a wholly distinctive piece of work. And we asked Roisin to shed further light about how the video for Exploitation came into being - the inspiration, the concept, and the process...[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;<blockquote>&quot;It is reference heavy,&nbsp;particularly an ad where Fay Dunaway seductively peels and eats a boiled egg!&quot;</blockquote>PN: Could you tell us more about your decision to direct your own music video?RM:&nbsp;I had some sleepless nights making the decision to direct my video. It&#39;s been seven years since the last Roisin Murphy film outing,&nbsp;so the pressure was on to create something that could satisfy my rather beleaguered fan base. The videos from my last album were undoubtedly strong and crucially expensive but in today&#39;s music industry those bugets are simply out of my reach. So I was in fact, not sure I should do videos at all. An old friend and film producer Phil Tidy&nbsp;convinced me we could do it, promising he could cover all eventualities apart from a lack&nbsp;of ideas and vision.&nbsp;Are there any cinematic or theatrical references or influences that you could shed any light on?After such a long spell away from making visuals I had built up a store of references and inspiration. This video really springs from the photo shoot I did for the album sleeve in which I developed a strange sort of vintage aesthetic and a character to go with this new era. The character is a woman from my childhood memory &ndash;&nbsp;partly my own mother, partly film stars such as Fay Dunaway, Catherine Deneuve and Gina Rowlands. They were&nbsp;already mature in the 80&#39;s as I was growing up. I was looking for icons I could relate to, so I had to dig a little deeper because for me now at 41 there is no one in pop music I can truly feel a connection to.There seems to be a lot here about performance and female identity. Is there a specific message you wanted to convey, or do you prefer to leave it open to interpretation?Actresses have always provided me with inspiration and the video is the story of one caught up in a manipulative relationship and an exploitative world where creativity is always compromised by commercial concerns. The idea was of a perpetual play and a perpetual advert, high art vs. low commercial interests, it&#39;s meant to disorientate.<blockquote>&quot;I was looking for icons I could relate to, so I had to dig a little deeper. At 41 there is no one in pop music I can truly feel a connection to.&quot;</blockquote>I watched a fair bit John Cassavetes too and took direct inspiration from Chanel No.&nbsp;5 ads featuring Catherine Deneuve &ndash; though my perfume &quot;assumptions&quot; is a distinctly lower priced concoction. And so, after sleepless nights of indecision I must say I enjoyed making this video. I suppose exploiting myself shouldn&#39;t feel so good, but it does.&nbsp;
