OK Go are back with a video during lockdown which, as one might expect, is a bit different from anyone else's. In fact what distinguishes it is quite unexpected: it's not so much the visuals but the song itself, which has been written during the crisis.As band frontman (and prime orchestrator of their extraordinary visual output) Damian Kulash Jr has written in <a href="https://okgo.net/alltogethernow" target="_blank">a letter on the OK Go website</a>, he and his wife Kristin&nbsp;contracted the&nbsp;coronavirus themselves weeks ago, with Kristin being worringly ill for a while.&nbsp;"She was only briefly at the hospital, but bedridden with breathing problems for a long stretch," he writes.Finding that his thoughts swayed from anxiety to unaccountable feelings of hope, Kulash read an essay from historian Rebecca Solnit, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/07/what-coronavirus-can-teach-us-about-hope-rebecca-solnit" target="_blank">The Impossible Has Already Happened</a>, which gave that some context. He summarizes Solnit's hypothesis as:&nbsp;"When the status quo evaporates, anything is possible, for better or for worse. Crises are when we learn who we are. Without our frame of reference, we reinvent ourselves. Our best and worst impulses struggle against each other anew, and while our darkest fears become more real, so do our wildest hopes."That became a driving force behind the new song, All Together Now. The video is a document of the four bandmembers performing and recording the song, each from their own homes in Los Angeles, and the the 'OK Go-ness' of the video comes from the inventive use of split screens to bring the band together.&nbsp;It ends with the each bandmembers' performance ending at the same moment, at 8pm - the time each night when LA residents makes some noise in support of their&nbsp;healthcare workers.&nbsp;Ultimately it becomes a tribute to frontline workers in the fight against Covid-19, and all proceeds from the video are going to <a href="https://www.pih.org/" target="_blank">Partners In Health</a>, with the band urging viewrs to make thir own separate donation.

OK Go&#39;s latest epic, co-directed by the band&#39;s Damian Kulash, Jr. and Yusuke Tanaka, applies the mosaic technique used so effectively at sporting events worldwide and, indeed, in the band&#39;s previous Japanese-made video. But here the human element is replaced by a football stands-worth of printers.Not for the first time, it&#39;s a visual tour de force, with some real jawdropping moments as, somehow, the makers have orchestrated 567 printers to all work properly at the same time, again and again. In this the band collaborated with&nbsp;paper manufacturers Double A, who have commented that it took five days to shoot, after two weeks rehearsals.One change from the OK Go norm here is that it&#39;s not a one-take video: it employs stop motion animation, and different set-ups. And of course, it used a great deal of paper, which is something for the internet to get steamed up about, even though the&nbsp;paper used was recycled and the proceeds donated to Greenpeace.But in another respect, it really has broken the internet - or at least YouTube. Carrying on their seemingly untouchable video reputation, and clearly not deterred by the&nbsp;recent parody by AJJ, OK Go are back, to step up their video game with more feats of shock, awe, meticulous planning and downright visual bliss. It begs the question will they ever run out of ideas?Hopefully not, as this video is truly a treat to watch. Using high-speed cameras, digital rigs and triggers and a whole heap of maths, the bulk of the video unfolds over a period of time that took just 4.2 seconds to shoot (well, more or less). But a hell of a lot happens in that time. Paint flies everywhere, flipbook animations lip sync to the track, some guitars explode, people fly through the air...All in a day&#39;s work for OK Go. Or several months work, as it almost certainly was. And a&nbsp;full breakdown of the mind-bending clip as written by director/singer Damian Kulash, Jr. can be found&nbsp;here&nbsp;(including a helpful spreadsheet breakdown of all the timings, for you stats enthusiasts).

The greatest of the great OK Go videos are generally known in shorthand as &#39;the treadmill one&#39;, or the &#39;Rube Goldberg Machine one&#39;, and so on. Now, the video for Upside Down &amp; Inside Out will always be known as &#39;the zero gravity one&#39;.It&#39;s up there with the best. It&#39;s not just that it&#39;s mind-bendingly clever, and was even more awesomely difficult to achieve - and it is certainly those things. The &#39;zero gravity one&#39; &ndash; created by OK Go with long-time collaborator and the choreographer (and singer Damien Kulash&#39;s sister) Trish Sie - is also just fantastically entertaining, a total &#39;wow&#39; from start to finish.Created with the considerable assistance of the Russian S7 Airlines, it&#39;s already from day one, a viral phenomenon. Just when you thought OK Go must have exhausted all the possibilities of the insanely ingenious&nbsp;art-performance video; and that <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2014/06/19/ok-go-writings-wall-aaron-duffy-damian-kulash-jr-bob-partington" target="_blank">Writing&#39;s On The Wall</a> was surely&nbsp;the last word in jawdroppingly art directed and&nbsp;choreographed one-take&nbsp;extravaganzas...&nbsp;Okay, no-one actually thought that they would stop doing this sort of thing. We&#39;re just glad that&nbsp;Honda got in touch, and showed the guys something they&#39;ve been working on for a while...&nbsp;It&#39;s the latest beta version of Honda&#39;s mini-personal mobility device,&nbsp;the Uni-Cub. Part-unicycle, part sitdown segway, it&#39;s the co-star of the video&nbsp;for I Won&#39;t Let You Down, together with hundreds of Japanese schoolkids who also make a crucial contribution to a visual display only visible from the air.The result,&nbsp;directed by Damian together with Kazuaki Seki, and&nbsp;Morihiro Harano as creative director, is just as impressive and spectacular as we have come to expect from this remarkable band.But arguably the biggest star of the video, in a technical sense,&nbsp;is behind the camera. Or rather, it is the eye of the video. When the horizontal steadicam-like movement (shot half-speed, as is clear from the first seconds of the video) as OK Go move on their Uni-Cubs from studio to exterior,&nbsp;suddenly goes vertical,&nbsp;it&#39;s no secret how it&#39;s done. But it is one of the most imaginative&nbsp;uses of drone technology yet seen.For a band that specialises in &#39;wow&#39; moments, it is up there with the best. For their latest magnum opus, it looks initially as if OK Go have returned to the Rube Goldberg Machine of their This Too Shall Pass video - perhaps to try to make it a true one-shot video this time.&nbsp;As if they would bother with anything so unambitious... &nbsp;&nbsp;The video for Writing&#39;s On The Wall may look like it was shot in the same studio, but the focus of their latest jawdropper is a continuous stream of in-camera optical illusions and perspective tricks.&nbsp;Ridiculously great ones.Aaron Duffy and Bob Partington, two directors signed to 1st Ave Machine, got together with OK Go lead singer Damian Kulash to direct this - although &#39;Special Guest&#39; gets a special credit for creating the video, with production designer Cheri Anderson as their&nbsp;executive producer.More background about the video will no doubt emerge soon. Suffice to say, this comfortably sits among the greatest of the great&nbsp;music videos that OK Go have made. It may also&nbsp;be&nbsp;more ammunition to those naysayers who argue that&nbsp;the band&#39;s videos are more memorable than their songs, but it doesn&#39;t change the fact this is yet another remarkable exercise by pop&#39;s resident visual performance artists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the pantheon of OK Go videos (and its now a quite large pantheon) this rates as the arguably the most outlandish, least feasible and certainly the biggest budgeted one so far: a kind of automotive musical Rube Goldberg machine. The kind only made possible by a partnership with a car company.One thousand instruments, placed over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles, are &#39;played&#39; by a Chevy Sonic, outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms, while the band record this version of Needing/Getting while sitting in the speeding car, driven by lead singer Damian Kulash.You can well believe, as it says on the YouTube page, that the video took four months of preparation and four days of shooting and recording; and Damian drove it all himself, having taken stunt driving lessons.Does the car actually &#39;play&#39; the song Well, apparently each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note, so that played the right note no matter where they were struck...
