The Stepford Wives&nbsp;meets Alice in Wonderland as Charlie&nbsp;Sarsfield&nbsp;transports us to a surreal world where&nbsp;Rita Ora endures a fictional wedding from hell.The&nbsp;vibrant visual for You Only Love Me features scenes of a bride’s day turned tumultuously upside-down, in which Sarsfield was inspired by Tim Burton and Wes Anderson for the LA-shot video - and features a cameo by none other than Sharon Stone.Charlie Sarsfield says:&nbsp;"The concept for ‘You Only Love Me’ is centered around a nightmare wedding but we wanted it to feel somewhere in between a dream and a nightmare, where everything is continually going wrong but building up incrementally throughout the visual.[imgtoken data:1]"We cast a group of ‘bad-maids’ around Rita, focussed on making the day amazing for themselves, rather than Rita. Colour plays a really important role in this. The ‘bad-maids’ are dressed in bright, clashing colours, whereas Rita is in a neutral palette throughout, highlighting the idea that she is out of place in a surreal world."I drew inspiration from directors such as Tim Burton and Wes Anderson in terms of colour, shooting style, production design and accessories. Pairing slow camera zooms and vibrant colours with bold outfits and wigs, reminiscent of movies such as ‘Edward Scissorhands’. "Rita was truly amazing, she is an artist that knows her strengths and she gave a great performance. The video is a bold release, stepping away from the traditional pop video and making something that we both wanted to make. We had a lot of fun in the process too!”

Jordan Rossi directs an empassioned promo for South African singer-songwriter, actor and novelist Nakhane, featuring Perfume Genius, with a work that takes its cue from some pillars of Queer cinema and art.&nbsp;The video for Do You Well begins&nbsp;with Nakhane and their love interest glistening under sparkling lights in a studio space, and then&nbsp;battling to create a common ground, before finally connecting with each other.&nbsp;Gorgeous and thrilling, the video visualises a complex set of emotions in a stylish and thought-provoking manner, and the end result is wonderfully alluring.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]"Nakhane already had a concept for this video," Rossi reveals.&nbsp;"It was very much centred around a wrestling encounter between two people in a homoerotic fashion. They wanted to express the idea of a duel and the ridiculous nature of aggressive masculinity."Nakhane and I drew inspiration from lots of Queer art and cinema such as Pink Narcissus by James Bidgood, Querelle by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Moonlight by Barry Jenkins and Sebastien by Derek Jarman. We also looked at features like Fight Club and Shame - both dealing with masculinity, sex and relationships in a unique manner.[imgtoken data:2]"Visually, I wanted a really deep and textured image with lots of energy. Hannah is ready to settle down and start a family; Chris far more inclined to retain their independence. Can they reconcile these conflicting impulses?Lambert's short film directing debut is impressive, with engaging performances by&nbsp;by Hannah Higton and Noah Granville, with outstanding cinematography by Adam Barnett.&nbsp;&nbsp;"It's about that moment in a relationship when it’s crunch time," says Lambert. "The moment when you’re at a certain age and forever feels incredibly close. When you’re not sure if you’re with the one, or if you could find another one, or if that’s a crap societal construction anyway."

Jordan Rossi takes Craig David into a colourful surrealist adventure for his video for&nbsp;My Heart's Been Waiting For You.Craig performs this garage-influenced club hit in a serious of increasingly surreal settings, with outer space encroaching into modern-day London. And periodically everything then suddenly ramps up into another dazzling visual dimension.[imgtoken data:1]"The brief was wide open," explains Rossi.&nbsp;"All that was stated was they wanted a green screen video that had the vibe of Craig's tour footage. I took that and ran with it, and wanted to craft a luminous surrealist fantasy that was equal parts Dali with Craig's R&amp;B-pop aesthetic."Craig was the best collaborator a director could ask for. Hugely respectful of the art but always wanted to push the boundaries creatively. It meant that what was a green screen video became a smash of reality and illusion in the most entrancing of ways. The final result is a fantasia of colour and other worldly scenarios. All seemingly familiar but with a twist."

Alexander Brown directs a brilliantly ferocious performance promo for Bloc Party's return to action with Traps.&nbsp;Playing their comeback single, frontman&nbsp;Dele Okereke and his bandmates are effectively trapped themselves, within a seething&nbsp;mass of enthusiastic fans.&nbsp;This is presented in a disorientating fashion, mostly in extreme close-up - this was shot by DoP Pieter Snyman on a probe lens -&nbsp;intercut with the frenetic motion of the crowd, forcing their way ever closer to the group, and at one point dragging a bandmember from a car.&nbsp;The blood-red lighting&nbsp;and indistinct shots of the people surrounding them (they are wearing masks throughout) creates a breathless atmosphere, which matches Bloc Party's unconstrained energy. Overall, it's a brilliantly kinetic and stylish piece of work by Alexander Brown, making one of his irregular returns himself to music videos.[imgtoken data:1]<blockquote>There’s something intrinsically cathartic but also unsettling about being in a crowd.</blockquote>"The basic idea for me, was to make a video which felt like you are in the middle of a mosh pit," says Brown.&nbsp;"After being conditioned by lockdown, there’s something intrinsically cathartic but also slightly unsettling about being in a crowd."I was immediately drawn into the sardonic character Kele created in the lyrics, which is all a bit wild and unhinged and lurid. I wanted to capture that feeling of being in a crowd or a club and not being entirely comfortable with the intimacy. It’s a performance video in all it's&nbsp;glory. I wanted it all to be shot in an unhinged way, as if the band are playing from within the crowd, removing the stage/crowd divide."The camera swings and turns like a headless chicken - and everywhere it turns we unravel a new moment. It feels chaotic but within the chaos we have disorientating, dizzying transitions, and carefully orchestrated setups with surprises and twists and turns along the way. The song is called Traps. So it seemed interesting to have the band feel like they were trapped in this mob and we can’t quite tell if its amazing, or uncomfortable.[imgtoken data:2]<blockquote>I wanted to give the video a touch of&nbsp;The Evil Dead.</blockquote>"It was a conscious decision to give everyone masks. Aside from the safety aspect, I wanted the crowd to be anonymous and menacing - we don’t see anyone’s faces, only their legs, or chest. I want it to feel like a jungle of limbs. They are all wearing dark clothes so there is a homogenous feel to them, threatening."We shot this with a probe lens so we could go right up to the band, and do all sorts of amazing movements. Big thanks to Piet [Snyman] for waving around a metre-long camera completely handheld! We shot this on a Red Komodo, which I think makes it the longest lens, with one of the smallest cameras."Brown adds that the moment when the bandmember is dragged from the on-set car was another touch of madness that the song required.&nbsp;"I wanted to give the video a touch of The Evil Dead, and having the crowd pressed up to the glass, pulling Russel out of the door at the end just seemed to do that. We weren’t sure if we were going to get that on the day as it was the last shot, with twenty&nbsp;minutes to spare we just managed to squeeze it in. It was handy having an incredibly long lens as it means we could poke it right through a car window. "I want to give a big shout out to all the people who came down on the day, the energy we got from the crowd was fantastic!"

Things get messy in Jackson Ducasse's video for Wilkinson, featuring&nbsp;alt-pop newcomer Issey Cross.&nbsp;The latest release from the drum 'n bass legend gets a chromatic visual full of neon colours and glossy cinematography.&nbsp;Cutting between close-up shots of coloured paint on a pulsating speaker, and featured artist Cross spreading paint all over her body, the concept is very much interpretive of the lyrics and straight to the point, in the best way possible.&nbsp;

Sparks fly and chaos reigns when Kylie comes to Jessie Ware's restaurant, in Sophie Muller's brilliant Telenovella-style video for Kiss Of Life.&nbsp;Kylie plays a mysterious dinner guest, secretly a critic out to deliver the verdict on the place&nbsp;run by the indominable Jessie, among an outrageously larger-than-life bunch of&nbsp;fellow diners. The mini-dramas of the women's rivalry plays out like an '80s Latin soap opera, with further nods to early Almodovar, and a bit of silent comedy for good measure - plus a cast from a Fellini movie&nbsp;-&nbsp;shot on authentic video camera equipment from the period, for that genuine oversaturated look. Phew.[imgtoken data:1]Muller's latest video for&nbsp;Kylie is also her second collaboration with creative director and performance director&nbsp;Theo Adams, after the Kylie and Years &amp; Years video for A Second To Midnight, and together they have a devised this delicious scenario in which both Kylie and Jessie play their parts - and perform the song - with suitable relish. In fact, could this&nbsp;be Kylie's first role in a soap since leaving Neighbours...?Adams says of collaborating on the music video with Muller: “It all happened quite organically between us both sitting at her kitchen table cackling away coming up with this fever dream of chaos!"Adams was responsible for recruiting the&nbsp;amazing cast of performers in the video, including&nbsp;nightlife royalty Princess Julia, among others. They are&nbsp;indeed the&nbsp;Theo Adams Company, and they play such a crucial role in bringing effervescent chaos to proceedings -&nbsp;shot in a real&nbsp;Italian restaurant in London's Covent Garden,&nbsp;the garishly maximalist Ave Mario's.[imgtoken data:2]As a result of the location choice, the whole video was shot overnight, when the restaurant was closed. And the&nbsp;shoot itself was undertaken rather like an episode of an 80s Telenovella, as Sophie Muller explains.&nbsp;“The video was all shot on an 80’s news camera - the ikegami 79D three-tube 1980’s colour portable - at a hair raising speed," she says. "And considering the hellishly late night/early morning hours of the shoot, everyone contributed their finest performances.”Apart from the necessary element of chaos - which was possibly quite easy to achieve - the whole&nbsp;kaboodle plays to the artists' strengths. The food connection works for Jessie Ware (cookery writer and podcaster as well as consummate soul singer) and the outrageously camp scenario obviously fits the&nbsp;Kylie iconography&nbsp;like a glove.&nbsp;But not only is this arguably the campiest video she's ever done, she looks utterly iconic in this. And she is funny.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:3]As has been <a href="https://www.wmagazine.com/culture/kylie-minogue-jessie-ware-kiss-of-life-fashion" target="_blank">pointed out elsewhere</a>, the video is also a haute couture spectacle - with the leading ladies decked out in Saint Laurent and Valentino&nbsp;- and this certainly involved a larger than normal&nbsp;glam squad. And it culminates with a rare music video monologue from Kylie, who reads out her five-star review of the restaurant as she types it up on an old typewriter. Well, she's tapping the keys anyway...It's so good. And after this, apparently there's a Kylie collab with disco queen Gloria Gaynor to look forward to...

Directing duo Meeks + Frost bring together an all-star line-up of talent in this&nbsp;special celebration&nbsp;of UK producer&nbsp;Swindle's latest album The New World - including the performance of six tracks from the album - filmed at the lavish Christ Church Hall in Spitalfields, East London.Featuring Poppy Ajhuda, Kojey Radical, Joel Culpepper, Jnr Williams, Maverick Sabre, Akala, Knucks, Rider Shafique and Ghetts - and of course Swindle himself - Meeks + Frost have created a marvellous 20 minute film where the music of the album, and the personality and chemistry of the individuals involved, comes brilliantly and stylishly to life.[imgtoken data:1]The album, Swindle's first release since 2019, was written&nbsp;in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the project brings together a community of artists who found the most simplistic emotion of joy together in collaboration. They explore themes such as love, grief, fatherhood, life, race in Britain, aspirations for their future selves and other personified rumination experienced during the first lockdown in early 2020.The film is packed with songs from the album from start to finish, beginning with the arrival of several of the artists, dressed to the nines in suits and eveningwear that echoes the 1920s Jazz Age, to the strains of What's More. Then on the next song Sunday Best, featuring Kojey Radical, Culpepper and Knucks, the on-screen performances start, and we see the artists' back at the tailors' being fitted for their suits.[imgtoken data:2]To How I've Been, the artists greet each other at the Church - a reunion of friends at a special gathering, and that mood carries through the course of several superb performances that follow.On Blow Ya Trumpet, a quartet of formidable rappers - Knucks, Ghetts, Akala, Kojey - pass the baton around the table as they drink and play dominos. Then the soul and jazz mood takes over, and backup musicians join the cast, as Poppy Ajhuda performs Darkest Hour with Swindle.&nbsp;For No Black, No Irish, the jazz mood is emphasised further by a transition to monochrome for Culpepper and Maverick Sabre's affecting performance of No Blacks, No Irish, with accompanying&nbsp;musicians.[imgtoken data:3]And it is in these performance sequences that Meeks + Frost really excel, with a perfect arrangement of the photography, captures the quality of the performance with great style but also without drawing attention to itself. That is really fine live performance direction.The performance element finishes on Lost, which brings us squarely back to the theme of change that is central to Swindle's The New World. And overall, this does something that is rare for a music film of this length - it demands your attention throughout, and leaves the viewer with a sense they have witnessed something very special. And a need&nbsp;to listen to the album again.&nbsp;Massive kudos&nbsp;to everyone who worked on this film - behind the camera and in front of it.&nbsp;&nbsp;[imgtoken data:4]
