The second of Anthony Dickenson's new videos is another example of the director's dedication to visual experimentation, and intimacy. In this case,&nbsp;for Finley Browne's Being Young Is Getting Old,&nbsp;he subverts the conventions surrounding the use of motion control cameras to explore the ups and downs of a relationship.With a couple, played by Sophie Emmett and Luke Booys, events are replayed and run simultaneously, often in a triptych-effect. The motion control and split screen is employed to run concurrent narratives, or repeated shots, and primarily a storytelling tool.There is a randomness at work with the use of the technology which suggests the effect of different viewpoints and the possible presence of an 'unreliable' narrator. It's an intriguing&nbsp;way to address the complex realities of a relationship which is possibly on its last legs.[imgtoken data:1]

His output in music videos has been sporadic in recent years, but now two videos by Anthony Dickenson have arrived at once. The first is for the Daniel Brandt's remix of London band Friedberg's Midi 8, which creates a soaring connection to the music with an entirely minimal approach.Created entirely on a car journey in Athens with&nbsp;Friedberg lead singer Anna F, Dickenson takes an almost abstract approach to an intimate moment, capturing the singer in a series of extreme, near tactile close-ups. Rather than quick-cutting, Dickenson uses the effect of street lighting, Anna's wind-blown hair&nbsp;as the car speeds along, and camera speed-ramps to dovetail the visuals with the music.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In characteristic fashion, Anthony Dickenson has created something hypnotic yet visceral, by exploring the visual possibilities of a single set-up for all its worth.[imgtoken data:1]

A woman deals with crippling loneliness in Anthony Dickenson's return to music videos for Australian singer-songwriter Stu Larsen.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stumbling from room to room, location to location, the main character - played by German actor Aylin Tezel - is trying to fill her time, plagued by memories of better times and an intense urge to escape.&nbsp;Strikingly human and authentic, Tezel's performance in Wide Awake And Dreaming&nbsp;focuses on the&nbsp;minutiae of everyday life, as she attempts to busy herself with small details - condensation on a window, snippets of words said between lovers - whilst suffering with an&nbsp;anxious mind.&nbsp;Doubling up as DoP as well as director, Dickenson's gentle direction and ability to create intimate scenes through the cinematography creates a perfect visual accompaniment to Larsen's&nbsp;melodic track.This is an impressive&nbsp;return to the medium by the director, who came on&nbsp;came on board after Stu Larsen had connected with Aylin Tezel&nbsp;to initiate the music video project,&nbsp;in rather unusual circumstances - as Dickenson explains below.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anthony Dickenson has delivered this suitably atmospheric video for&nbsp;Findlay Brown&#39;s Ride Into The Sun from his upcoming third studio album,&nbsp;Slow Light.&nbsp;The nostalgic, grainy visual&nbsp;plays out like a time-capsule from another time, with&nbsp;the forlorn&nbsp;singer&nbsp;singing his song&nbsp;among flares of overexposed film and&nbsp;bits of refracted light.In regards to the video&#39;s look and feel,&nbsp;Dickenson told&nbsp;Interview Magazine,&nbsp;&quot;the heat that envelops Findlay had to feel real; it had to come from light overexposing film and not a post effect.&nbsp;We chose 16mm over 35mm for the raw quality.&nbsp;All of the elements you see in this piece were created in the camera&mdash;cut glass and long exposure techniques were used as layers to burn through the film.&quot;&nbsp;

Anthony Dickenson's beautiful in-camera photographic effects work has translated seamlessly to the new big Nike viral, out of Wieden + Kennedy, for the new T6 Laser III boots, designed to improve power and accuracy. 
Hit The Target, created by Phil Monks and Mike Cuthell, and creatively directed by Stuart Harkness, transforms Wayne Rooney's shooting practice into a Mission Impossible-style laser challenge - controlled by fellow striker and worthy adversary Fernando Torres. In a stylised environment, fast-paced movement mixes with slow-motion contact between boot and ball, all set to a dubstep soundtrack from 16 Bit. 
It's not hard to see how Anthony's previous videos, like <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/02/25/kap-bambino%E2%80%99s-red-sign-by-anthony-dickenson-whos-joined-pulse/" target="_blank">Kap Bambino</a>, made him the right choice to make this. All in all, it's a brilliant demonstration of a couple of formidable players. One is in the form of his life, and looking forward to a big summer; the other is playing at Villa tomorrow night.

"I really wanted to make a strong beauty piece for this track. Becky, the singer needed to be heavily featured so the plan was to envelop her in an environment that wouldn't only produce that flattering light but also help create a progression in my somewhat obscure narrative. 
"I had a location in mind called Fire in Vauxhall that I had been trying to work into a treatment for a while. It's a club with a backroom called The Lightbox. This space has an arched ceiling made up of over 1000 programmable LED's. It is pretty impressive to look at but even more impressive on film. So with only a couple of days to prep I set about trying organize the programming of this light ceiling so that it felt entirely synched with the track. Dan Solis did a fantastic job of putting it all together in After Effects but due to time constraints we were still putting the finishing touches to the sequence at 4am on the day of the shoot. All part of the fun. 
"We arrived at the club at 7.30am and were completely freaked out by the sight of sweaty clubbers, flyer packs and a string of bouncers waiting to eject the last few stragglers from our location. Pumping techno was still echoing around the almost empty space. This was a Friday morning by the way. Anyway we got on with it and by 8 the space was completely ours. "I was lucky enough to have the extremely talented Robbie Ryan on board as my DoP and after my producer Hannah had skillfully managed to acquire everything on his lighting list with our limited budget we ended up using none of it. Everything in this promo is lit by the LEDs. Me and Robbie are particularly proud of that. Ha ha. 
"The day ran smoothly and Becky was absolutely awesome to work with. She was very responsive to direction and very patient. This was important because we had a technical issue, which meant we could not sync the lightwall footage directly to the track. This meant I had to freestyle it a little on the LED control desk to make it seem more in sync. It was great standing in the DJ booth watching my monitor while fading in and out crazy preset lighting patterns to the track. I felt like a super star VJ! 
"The video is split into two sections. During the first half I wanted it to feel quite dreamy and intimate while trying to avoid revealing the space around Becky too much. In the second half I wanted her to really look like she was interacting with the lighting, almost pushing and pulling it around. The lighting patterns had to appear to be emanating from her touch. It was really important to me that I let my DOP go to town on this. Robbie really pulled out all the clever lens trickery that I think adds a whole other layer to this video. Mad props."

Groove Armada’s I Won’t Kneel by Anthony Dickenson

Two fine new examples of visual experimentation from the highly talented Anthony Dickenson.
You could watch Anthony's intriguing video for Miike Snow's Animal many times without figuring out how he magically creates a forest which then turns into a city, but essentially it's a combination of projections, animation, and sculpture - with added band performance - and mapping the projection took ages. Catchy song too.

And Anthony has conducted another of his light-experiments with the video for fine new indie outfit The XX's Basic Space.
This one was achieved by shooting objects on a rotating turntable on very long exposures in a simple lighting set-up - Anthony shot this himself. The results are subtly gorgeous, and with a simple performance nicely complement the track.
