BUG 50 - all the videos

Promonews - 17th Mar 2016

The landmark 50th edition of BUG's regular round-up of global music video creativity at the BFI Southbank in London demanded a very special guest. And there was one - none other than Steve Barron, who helped invent the music video as we know it.

Steve (above with Adam Buxton) directed a stream of classic videos in the 1980s for The Human League, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, A-Ha, and many other artists, before transferring seamlessly into directing features (like the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Jim Henson) and big TV series. He talked to Adam about those times at the premiere of BUG 50 on March 4th, and also read from Egg, Chips & Billie Jean, his wonderful memoir about his experience working with Michael Jackson - with a bit of help from Adam, and while showing rushes from the Billie Jean video shoot.

As well as a smattering of Barron classics - including A-Ha's Take On Me – as well as some far more recent work - music videos that have been released in the past few months that push the envelope of creativity in the medium - including extraordinary videos for De Staat, Oneohtrix Point Never, Yeasayer and The Shoes - and, of course, OK Go's recent trip into zero gravity.

Plus, the return of 90s giants Massive Attack and Chemical Brothers with their latest extravaganzas... and Ninian Doff's marvellous revisionist version of Bond for Miike Snow.
