Best of 2024:
New Directors

Our review of 2024 continues with our Directors Of The Year - split into three lists.

And firstly, it's our pick of the best New Directors. They made their first appearance on Promonews in the past year - some already having made a big impression, and others who show terrific potential to do so.

Following these first 15 choices. look out for our next two Directors Of The Year lists...

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Luna Carmoon

    Fontaines D.C. - Here's The Thing

Taking the unconventional route of making her music video directing debut after directing her first feature (Hoard), Luna Carmoon made a striking impact with two remarkable videos for Fontaines D.C. She's a singular talent that will hopefully flow freely between features and music projects for a long time to come.

    Charlie & Charlie

    shortstraw. 'Good For Nothing'

Charlie Drinkwater and Charles Gall have collaborated regularly for some years, whilst working at Island Records and then subsequently, with Drinkwater art directing and Gall directing. But their first outing as a directing team came for feisty Coventry rapper shortstraw last year, before they made a big leap forward with a 20 minute longform for Wasia Project. And a visual album for James Arthur is on its way.

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    DONPROD

    Central Cee X Raye 'Moi'

Isle of Wight natives DONPROD have made a real impact in grime videos and beyond in the past couple of years, working with most of the scene's major players in promos and branded content - slightly beyond our radar until they joined the roster at REBEL.@Rogue. So their first appearance here was one of the blingiest of UK grime videos last year - Central Cee and RAYE's conspicuous shipping expedition to Paris.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Jackson Lee Forsythe

    Sasha Keable 'Hold Up'

With an apprenticeship that included working on sets of Edgar Wright and Steve McQueen features, with original aspirations to be a cinematographer, Forsythe has been honing his craft to create outstanding imagery, winning a YDA at Cannes. It's evident in the vivacious video for Sasha Keable - gritty and authentic but also radiating joy. His new for Rema is another big step forward.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Grajper

    Stone 'Queen'

Making waves in his native Poland - including Cameraimage recognition - Grajper signed to FRIEND in the UK in 2023 but it took last year's video for Liverpool band Stone to show what he is capable of. A very cool, clever video featuring two versions of frontman Fin Power, skirting a line between the everyday and the uncanny.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    David Heofs

    Omar Apollo 'Spite'

A Spanish director and graphic designer based in Madrid, David Heofs has brought his talents, particularly a striking use of colour, to several videos for US/Mexican artist Omar Apollo, and in Spite, celebrated Apollo's Mexican roots across a series of strikingly gorgeous set-ups.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Abdi Ibrahim

Sasha Keable ft 6lack 'Take Your Time'

Establishing himself first as a photographer, Abdi Ibrahim has been building his directors' reel in the US in the past couple of years, before he garnered his first UK commission, the steamily atmospheric video for Sasha Keable & 6Lack.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Billy King

    Rushy X Antslive 'Estelle'

Building on his association with AntsLive that has brought success at the UKMVAs (as producer on Number One Candidate, director of Cutlery), Billy King is going from strength to strength.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Rosie Marks

Jamie xx 'Treat Each Other Right'

As a photographer who chronicles the extremes of beauty culture, Marks throws up a mirror to society - which is also what she does in her first music video for Jamie xx, where a rum collection of characters and celeb lookalikes congregate in a swingers club for a night of unhinged revelry.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    James Ogram

    Honeyglaze 'Don't'

Ogram demonstrated an impressive command for the form with his intense, claustrophobic video for Honeyglaze's edgy Don't. Has since shown his versatility with his excellent alien invader comedy for Fat Dog.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Lea Otovic

    Lonnie Gunn 'Jessie's Pitbull'

Coming into directing from a background in set design, Lea Otovic built a body of work through the year with videos for House Of Women, Lambrini Girls and three promos for singer-songwriter Lonnie Gunn, starting with the bold and sexy Jessie's Pitbull.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Ethan Ross

    Lexie Carroll 'Laundry Detergent'

Ross has directed a series of charming low-budget videos for singer-songwriters Lexie Carroll and Tinyumbrellas over the past couple of years, and this one for Lexie was the first we featured here. Very interested to see how his work progresses this coming year.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    Shadrinsky

    Yseult 'Bitch You Could Never'

The directing duo brought their fashion sense and penchant for organised chaos to the UKMVA-nominated video for Yseult. They have a winning formula - as proved with their next video for Jack Harlow - and the sky's the limit for Shadrinsky.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    TORSO

    Charli XCX 'Von Dutch'

The directing duo's first appearance here came with the in-your-face video that kicked off the year of the Brat. They went on to make the best thing that came out of Katy Perry's rather less successful album campaign.

    Featuring

  • Promonews' Best of 2024: New Directors

    David Vu

    CamelPhat & Nadia Ali 'Endlessly'

Director, dancer, choreographer David Vu has gained a huge following for his inventive dance videos and TikToks. His passion to tell stories through dance and movement in promos should take off following the launchpad of his impressive debut for Camelphat.
