Moses Sumney 'Vintage' by Moses Sumney
Promonews - 10th June 2024
Moses Sumney marks his return to music, after taking time to make his film and TV acting debuts, with a wonderful new single and a superb self-directed music video.
The video for Vintage bears the hallmarks of his past directorial work for videos from his last album græ – the auteurial lushness of his live concert film Blackalachia, the comedic surrealism of Cut Me, and the kinetic physicality of Virile. But it also sets out a new phase in Sumney's progression as a music artist with some gorgeous performance set-ups - including a substantial dance sequence by Moses and Brandon Mathis - and a distinct nod to the lush R&B videos of the early Noughties.
In close collaboration with Moses and cinematographer Marcell Rév (Euphoria, Malcolm & Marie, Miley Cyrus’s Flowers), Kodak supported the music video with a yet-to-be-released and never-before-used motion picture stock, which is similar to a beloved professional still photography film.
“Vintage is me sliding into the music I probably listen to most these days – progressive R&B," explains Sumney. "I crafted the video as a callback to the 90s/2000s clips of my childhood, when men weren’t afraid to beg and plead. I am once again begging to join the pantheon of great yearners: K-Ci & Jojo, Omarion, Ray J, Jodeci, Jagged Edge. Desire has always been at the core of my work; now the desire has a little shimmering shimmy to it.”
