The Jesus And Mary Chain 'Jamcod' by Ben Unwin

Promonews - 8th Dec 2023

Veteran indie rock outfit The Jesus And Mary Chain are back with their familiar primal rock sound - characteristically heavy on the feedback and echo - and a strobetastic video for the first release from the new album, directed and edited by Ben Unwin, whose relationship with the band goes back twenty-five years.

This captures singer Jim Reid in a simple camera set-up performing the track Jamcod, intercut and overlaced with a brain-wilting mash of stock imagery - plus live gig footage of Jim's brother William as an occasional guitar-wielding silhouette. The video is essentially an object lesson in making something attential-grabbing from disparate elements, due to quality of the edit.

"I made two videos for the Mary Chain in 1998 just prior to them splitting up before reforming again many years later," explains Ben Unwin. "Despite the chaos of the time, I always enjoyed their company and recently I have been chatting regularly to them about a personal project. Amid this I was suddenly asked if I could make a video for the latest single.

"I have never had any discussions with the band about what their songs are about, as they hate talking about such things, so I just dived in. I coaxed Jim Reid and with some instruction over the phone, his partner filmed him lip syncing in this living room.

"Due to the recent conversations that I have had with both Reid brothers (about a long career and the pitfalls of rock 'n roll) I conducted random word searches in the free stock footage sites ranging from 'Addiction', 'Alcohol' and 'Hotels'. I then started altering any footage that I liked and generally fucking it up similar to the ways that I worked decades ago.

"Unfortunately, I could not get any footage of the notoriously camera-shy William Reid as he was in the middle of Arizona and the budget would not run to that! I then remembered that I had shot some slow-motion footage (with a mobile phone app) at a gig in Glasgow last year. They are still a terrific live band and I felt that the sudden explosions of live footage worked well with the structure of the song.

"The band has never mentioned the video to me but it got approved and they are still talking to me so I am presuming I got away with it!"
