Sascha Taylor Larsen/Eivind Hannisdal 'Donnie Dix' by Sascha Taylor Larsen
Promonews - 23rd May 2022
A comedic short film-cum-music video from Norwegian director Sascha Taylor Larsen, all about Donnie Dix - a heroic square-jawed guy in '80s New York, whose high opinion of himself starts to come unstuck.
Taylor Larsen's absorbing work is a parody of an era, the absurdity and the self-obsession, with Donnie (played by Eli Cusick) as the embodiment of that era, exuding machismo coupled with a complete lack of personal accountability.
Shot in New York City, Taylor Larsen creates an impressive and playful fascimile of the look of movies of the era, courtesy of Josh Herzog’s cinematography, Alex Hass’ lighting, Alexandra Ruggieri’s production design, the styling choices of Gaby Sprenkle, and Alexia Salingaros’ colouring.
The project actually stems from the lyrics, written by Taylor Larsen himself, about a young man who exudes self-assurance, but underneath it all is riddled by self-doubt. Taylor Larsen then asked award-winning composer Eivind Hannisdal to create accompanying music that was reminiscent of Jan Hammer's iconic sountrack for Miami Vice - but with additional irony.
Then came the well-crafted film - which is now on the international film festival circuit.
