Run The Jewels ft. Pharrell Williams & Zack De La Rocha 'Ju$t' by Winston Hacking
Rob Ulitski - 3rd Aug 2020
Winston Hacking, master of collage animation, directs a fiercely intense tour de force to accompany Run The Jewels' timely polemic Ju$t, featuring Pharrell and Zack De La Rocha from Rage Against The Machine.
Combining zine-style aesthetics with animation inspired by Public Enemy's Shut 'Em Down visual, the video presents a barrage of powerful imagery, chopping and changing at a relentless pace to match the lyrics. The lo-fi textures and a mindbending variety of typography through the course of the video keep viewers engaged and on their toes.
The central message and focus throughout is a poignant and angry call to rise against the machine of slavery and oppression. The visual style perfectly suits the message, employed and executed brilliantly by Winston Hacking.
WINSTON HACKING:
A visual 'fuck you' to systemic racism.
"I worked closely with Run The Jewels to create a satirical time-capsule of 2020 thus far, capturing the sentiment of their song using collage animation. Drawing on the influence of Public Enemy's classic Shut 'Em Down video, we combined cut-up images from contemporary and historical events into a psychedelic protest vignette - a visual fuck you to systemic racism."
