Nayana IZ 'TNT' by Ethan + Tom
David Knight - 1st June 2020
Having made three videos for East London rapper Flohio, tyro directing duo Ethan Barrett and Tom Gullum turn their attentions to Nayana IZ and a humdinger of a lockdown video created on limited resources but considerable resourcefulness.
It's perhaps not so surprising, as their Flohio videos - particularly their first one for Way2 - have demonstrated Barrett and Gullum's skills with DIY camera techniques. The video for TNT has those, but also accompanied by stop-frame animation and collage, created from Nayana's selfies, as she performs in and around her domestic space.
Barrett and Gullum then bring it all together in a thrilling edit. Impressive.
ETHAN BARRETT & TOM GULLUM:
If anything the challenge of shooting a video under these restrictions was exciting to us.
"Despite being in lockdown at the time of this shoot, we were keen to overcome the restrictions we found ourselves under and make something interesting and fun that we could all be proud of.
"If anything the challenge of shooting a video under these restrictions was somewhat exciting to us. We compiled a ‘shoot kit’ for Nayana of various cameras and rigs that we fashioned from the limited materials we had, and wrote a detailed instruction manual on how to bring the video we had conceptualised to life.
"The make-shift nature of the shoot was something that we wanted to carry throughout the video visually, using stop frame animation and collage to place Nayana in a space that transcended the confines of her bedroom.
"We also wanted the real time footage to feel in the same world as the paper-based stop frame, using elastic bands, packing tape and cardboard off of a box of hair dye to make the hood for the camera lens."
