Flyte 'Easy Tiger' by Mark Jenkin
Mark Jenkin, the BAFTA award-winning director of Bait, has created a haunting and moody music video whilst in lockdown for British alt-pop band Flyte.
Their latest single Easy Tiger has a wonderfully simple, analogue feel, with echoes of Elliot Smith. And that marries really well with Jenkin's signature organic, home movie style, where the footage has been created and treated as if it had been recently unearthed from ancient film canisters.
At first it's hard to discern what is happening, beyond the sense of looking down a vintage kaleidoscope, until vague images appear and then fade - including the face of Flyte frontman Will Taylor, and (perhaps) moments from a Cornwall holiday.
Bait has been described as one of the defining British films of recent times due to Jenkin's idiosyncratic style, and this is equally distinctive. To make it during lockdown, Jenkin took a strip of blank acetate handpainted with acrylic, dyed using inks, upon which he scratched images to create a base for the film. Then he downgraded iPhone footage from he received from the band through VHS and manipulated it in the studio, to be ingested into the edit with the existing Super 8 footage.
His intention was "to make something that feels amorphous – to create something that has a tactile feel to it, is a single artefact, to make something that feels like a found film and something that is timeless, abstract and unidentifiable in some ways." The result is an intriguing visual to introduce a new direction for Flyte, ahead of their long-awaited second album later this year.
WILL TAYLOR (FLYTE):
“When I wrote Easy Tiger I was exorcising shame, heartbreak, jealousy; almost impossible emotions to process, I almost regretted writing it. There’s a darkness and an emotional rawness to Mark’s work that suited the song perfectly. It would have been hard to trust anyone else with it.”
