Jehnny Beth 'Flower' by Anthony Byrne
Rob Ulitski - 19th Feb 2020
Peaky Blinders director Anthony Byrne presents a thrillingly sexual vision for Jehnny Beth's Flower.
Shot in black and white, the video explores an intoxicating relationship between the artist and a woman, played by Rex Adams. Across a series of vignettes, we see the women celebrate sexuality, independence and an undying lust for each other, pushing and pulling between fantasy and reality.
DoP Matthieu Plainfosse utilises heavy contrast lighting to evidence the dark and potentially dangerous obsession, complete with dutch angles and spinning camera movements to build upon this theme. The clever composition of foreground and background elements suggest an inital trepidation on Beth's part, whilst Adams confidently performs in the background. This is blown apart by the midpoint of the visual, when Beth strips off her clothes and actively chases her down, giving in to the fantasy.
Thrilling and enigmatic, the video is a perfect match to the moody and haunting track, and a testament to Beth's layered and complex artistry.
