A tribute to the narrative and visual aesthetics of typical Midnight Movies, Juan Pablo Rodríguez and Jonathan Specktor's video for Solo Tú, Dueles explores what it feels like to be trapped in a toxic relationship.
Hauntingly raw, the line between love and hate is explored through conceptual shots of the pair doing everyday things - driving to the beach, dancing around a campfire - but in a strained and surreal way. The girl can't get the guy to open up, there are fights, tears, reconciliation and then fights again, stuck in a Groundhog Day-style loop of emotional torture.
Camilo Monsalve's cinematography is a standout aspect of the project, the use of sickly yellow and pink lighting reflects the damaging and unhealthy relationship the pair are caught in, and is utilised throughout the most dramatic scenes to keep viewers on edge. Lead actors Alejandro Gonzalez and Florian Eribe give great performances as the lovesick couple, switching between moments of utter contempt and butterflies-in-your-stomach style love, and when the twist ending hits at the climax, it raises questions that will encourage viewers to repeat and watch it through a new lens.
