Vanessa Paradis 'Ces Mots Simples' by Jean-Baptiste Mondino
David Knight - 5th Nov 2018
After his UKMVA-nominated Lenny Kravitz video, Jean-Baptiste Mondino makes a quick return to music videos for another longtime collaborator, Vanessa Paradis.
Like the Kravitz video for Low, Mondino's video for Paradis's Ce Mots Simple explores a single image-concept, in this case one that has been present in art for centuries: the girl on a swing.
Paradis performs while sitting on the swing, the ropes of which extend high and out of frame, while the elfin singer's feet drift through water, ripples fading out into the milky white background. It's a powerful image.
If Mondino was inspired by Fragonard's rococo masterpiece The Swing, he has certainly simplified it - and made it even more potent as a symbol of sensuality.
