Blondie & Joan Jett 'Doom Or Destiny' by Rob Roth
Wouldn't it be great if Debbie Harry and Joan Jett took over the evening news? Well, move over Fiona Bruce, the kickass queens of punk and rock 'n roll are doing just that.
Created by longtime Blondie collaborator Rob Roth and Mill+, Debbie and Joan become the anchors of an alternative TV news show for the video for Doom Or Destiny. It is of course, inspired by current events, and the 'idiocracy' of Donald Trump. And it's a feminist-friendly anti-Fox News that will get your juices flowing.
Roth first started working with Blondie on their No Exit album in 1999, and has worked on various album covers, photography, design, live stage design and direction with them since. "This video represents a spectrum of female fierceness, the many different kinds I know” he says. “The video stars friends of mine from over the years such as Severely Mame and Macy Rodman, Roxanne Edwards as well as Kitty Boots who styled the video. Of course, this is in addition to Debbie, who’s a dear friend and Joan, a female Rock n’ Roll icon."
He adds that the aesthetic actually draws heavily from "a more tactile" era, where the tools were paper, ink and videotape. "Then [it's] mixed with the current language of social media and a metaphysical idea of time and other dimensions. It’s essentially asking, 'What is real?'”
Debbie Harry adds: “We wanted to comment on the bizarre state of media and news in the current political ‘idiocrasy’ we are watching play out in real time and create our own news channel that dealt with current issues such as the environmental collapse, fossil fuels, bee population decline, global warming, sexism, patriarchy, Trump and Russia, feminism, consumerism, the marketing of war and more.”
Many Mill+ artists and outside contributors offered designs, illustrations, animations and compositing magic based on Roth and Harry’s social causes, themes, and current events. So this was a huge collective effort. And Roth says it is also an example of something that does not happen too often any more within music videos.
“The current landscape of music videos has so little to do with true protest or some kind of social message. It can be truthful, but fun and funny, that is eternally punk to me.”
