Alt-J 'Deadcrush' by Young Replicant
Luke Bather - 14th July 2017
If you could go on a date with anyone living or dead, who would it be? Alt-J made their picks and that became the basis of Young Replicant's science fiction dance film.
Acting on behalf of the band, a machine in a subterranean bunker chooses Sylvia Plath, Lee Miller and Anne Boleyn, or at least it chooses their memories. Projected through small glass discs we intercut between these haunting, animated dance scenes (choreographed by Darcy Wallace) that are given a personality based on a computer's understanding of history.
There's a detached, uncanny valley element to the clip - Alex Takacs aka Young Replicant's second for the band's current album, after the brilliant 3WW earlier this year – as these renditions of historical figures live again for a fleeting moment before fading with the light of the projector.
