Hervé 'Last Lovers' by Josh Lipworth
David Knight - 12th June 2017
Josh Lipworth has fashioned a striking and poignant accompaniment to Hervé's Last Lovers, combining different photographic techniques to express a psychological journey of a young blind man.
Initially this young man moves tentatively through an idyllic forest setting, propelled towards a mysterious woman of his dreams. The sense of otherworldliness comes both from the location - it was filmed in rural Lithuania - and the infra-red photography that bleaches the foliage to white.
But is it real or a figment of the young man's imagination? Contrasting shots of the man and girl, each alone in a darkened room, increases the sense that this is an illusion, the dream of one or other, or both of them. The sense of mystery that pervades around the clip means that things are never quite resolved, but the Lipworth holds the tension with a series of beatuifully composed shots and intelligent camera moves. It makes for a very satisfying watch.
