Bonnie Banane ft Waltaa 'Champs-Elysées' by Helmi
David Knight - 5th June 2014
It's a brave thing to give the brands and the bling a bit of a slapping in this day and age, but Helmi gives it a go in his video for Bonnie Banana feat. Waltaa's Champs Elysees. It's a satire on the materialism that pervades modern youth culture - and a brilliant visual bombardment to boot.
The aesthetic is street culture, with a heavy nod to the 90s. But most importantly Champs Elysees - both song and video - is all about the importance of appearances, and how it quickly turns into materialism and vanity. And drugs.
Interestingly, Helmi and Bonnie and Waltaa developed the song and the visuals at the same time - a very unusual process, but highly effective. Chronicling runaway consumption with hard video FX works a treat. And appropriately the song that says 'everything's for sale' is available to download for free, on weirdata.net.
