Alex Takacs, aka Young Replicant, has long been recognised as a master of enigmatic narrative. In music videos for the likes of Alt-J, Flying Lotus, Purity Ring&nbsp;and others he creates worlds where the viewer is drawn to the characters and the sense of place, but also tested by a less conventional, more unpredictable reality.<a href="https://www.pulsefilms.com/director/young-replicant/commercials" target="_blank">Young Replicant</a> has now created another of these tantalising worlds in a new trilogy of videos for up and coming soul singer Sam Dew - his first since his evocative videos for Leon Vynehall a couple of years ago.The director reunited with DoP Dustin Lane, his collaborator on the award-winning <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/04/18/alt-j-3ww-young-replicant/47388" target="_blank">Alt-J video for 3WW</a>, to shoot the videos back-to-back in late 2020. In the lead-off video for NTWFL, he establishes a mysterious nocturnal world, where a quiet army of night workers (or possibly angels) are going about their business of prompting memories and emotions in the rest of the population. The video predominantly features actors Oprah Wambui and Joseph Otsiman - who briefly encounters Dew sitting in a diner (both seen on set above).[vidtoken data:0]In the second video for GONE, Dew now takes centre stage, in the diner. The world has become black and white, and has a strong sensibility of film noir as a night-working engineer (played by Tony Todd) disregards his own mortality when dealing with overhead electrical cables.[vidtoken data:1]Finally, in the third part of the trilogy for DJ, a woman (Doree Seay) leaves a supermarket at night, and drawn by a man she sees in the car park to a giant screen - and that man (Nyang Reat) is now an image on the screen, on a beach. Then she is transported to the beach, and joined by Sam Dew.[vidtoken data:2]With this wonderfully realised interconnecting set&nbsp;of music videos now all released, we got in touch&nbsp;to Takacs, aka Young Replicant, to talk about the development and execution of the Sam Dew project.What was the inspiration or starting point for the concept? Was this something that you developed with Sam Dew or developed by yourself from his brief?YR: I always try to make sure the idea follows the music. The first single, NTWFL has a dreamy doo-wop quality that's romantic but lonely, full of longing that spans a great distance. It has lyrics about cell phones but an organ sound that reminds me of old rocksteady tunes; textures of the future and the past combined.Sam’s brief mentioned night-time and circular narratives. Some early keywords I wrote down were 'nocturnal communication', 'the annunciation'&nbsp;and 'sandman'.I’ve always been drawn to the cultural metaphor of an unseen labourer responsible for everyday occurrences, like falling asleep or falling in love. I wondered if that labour would eventually get outsourced, if precarity and alienation exists in the dream world too.[imgtoken data:2]Above:&nbsp;Oprah Wambui, who plays 'The Writer', on set of the&nbsp;NTWFL videoWas this originally presented as a trilogy or series, or did it evolve after the first video was made?&nbsp;The whole trilogy evolved on paper way before anything was shot. The first treatment I wrote was for NTWFL, and that established the world. Sam and the label liked it enough to ask me to write on GONE, where Sam was to have more of a starring role.The world got bigger and new characters emerged in an organic way. What else can you tell us about them?Each has their own role to play in a nocturnal economy of desire. Some look for meaning in their work, others are just punching the clock. For the purposes of the script I had to give them each some kind of title.In order of appearance there's The Writer (Oprah Wambui), The Messenger (Joseph Otsiman), Sam (as himself), Gia (Doree Seay), The Contractor (Tony Todd), and The Ticket Agent (Nyang Reat).[imgtoken data:4]Above: Joseph Otsiman playing The Messenger, during the NTWFL video shoot&nbsp;Where did you shoot the Sam Dew videos? How much research goes into your choice&nbsp;of locations?We shot mostly in San Pedro and Malibu&nbsp;California, with one night in the valley. We had the rare luxury of prep time, so [DoP]&nbsp;Dustin Lane and I tried to dig really deep. By this point, I’ve seen just about every liquor market and late night restaurant in Los Angeles.&nbsp;We started with some guidance and wisdom from location scout J. Max Simon. Because we were shooting all three videos back-to-back, we had to keep it contained and strategic. Permitting night shoots during the height of Covid meant we had to avoid residential zones. We actually discovered the restaurant and the market by chance while en route to another spot. Their online listings had been buried.&nbsp;&nbsp;One key reference in our search was an image of a house beneath a freeway overpass that I had saved in a folder years ago. Max was convinced it was Photoshop, but I stumbled on the exact spot while randomly dropping the Streetview man on the map. It became one of my favourite shots Dustin and I have captured together.[imgtoken data:6]Above: Nyang Reat, on the&nbsp;DJ video shoot in Malibu, CaliforniaThe cards are an alluring focus of attention, not only for story purposes but because&nbsp;they are lovely objects in themselves. How did you design, and create the cards? Were they central to the idea at the start?They started out as something more like a passport photo but evolved into a deck of cards in later versions of the treatment. We were inspired by these collectible Swedish matchboxes from the 1950s that featured celebrities and musicians. I liked the idea that everyone has an eerie, airbrushed portrait somewhere, trading hands on a metaphysical black market.Gabbie Bautista did a brilliant job designing, photoshopping, and distressing the cards after collecting headshots from friends and crew members. Young Replicant rounds off his visual trilogy for Sam Dew, with the intriguing promo for DJ.This is the third video for Dew by Alex Takacs aka Young Replicant, in a series for the singer's debut album Moonlit Fools, which&nbsp;follows a network of mysterious workers, unseen by anyone, who deliver bubblegum card-like messages in the middle of the night. These then act as catalysts for emotion, stirring up heartache or desire in the recipients.The delightful first video for NTWFL sets the scene for this enigmatic scenario.[vidtoken data:0]&nbsp;Then in Gone, we begin to see the same action from a different perspective, adding characters and deepening the mystery in a classic noir style.[vidtoken data:1]The video for DJ brings Sam Dew more to the forefront in a performance setting without compromising the overall dreamlike quality. A woman is drawn by the card of Dew to a screen in a carpark where she finds him and is then transported to a deserted beach, where another&nbsp;screen blots out the night sky.Posing abstract questions about our purpose on Earth in the age of technology, and what might be stopping us from becoming our best selves, the video is painted with a melancholic aesthetic, mixing intimate, slice-of-life vignettes with jarring reminders of technological influence, in the form of these omnipresent screens and displays.&nbsp;Young Replicant has long been able to establishing a visual universe and internal logic to his work that is entirely unique, and he has refined that further in this trilogy. It's a lovely thing - while also being a terrific&nbsp;showcase for Sam Dew's talent as a vocalist.

Alex Takács aka Young Replicant&#39;s first video for Leon Vynehall captures a well-documented period,&nbsp;the American 1950s, around the lives of two waitresses at a New York diner, and makes it freshInspired by the book that inspired Vynehall&#39;s album, Movements (Chapter III) is simply full of things that make up the pattern of life and delivered with an element of craft and visual poetry that is quite breathtaking. Unquestionably up there with&nbsp;Takács&#39;s best work.&nbsp;

If you could go on a date with anyone living or dead, who would it be? Alt-J made their picks and that became the basis of Young Replicant&#39;s science fiction dance film.Acting on behalf of the band, a machine in a subterranean bunker chooses Sylvia Plath, Lee Miller and Anne Boleyn, or at least it chooses their memories. Projected through small glass discs we intercut between these haunting, animated dance scenes (choreographed by Darcy Wallace) that are given a personality based on a computer&#39;s understanding of history.There&#39;s a detached, uncanny valley element to the clip - Alex Takacs aka Young Replicant&#39;s second for the band&#39;s current album, after the brilliant&nbsp;<a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/04/18/alt-j-3ww-young-replicant" target="_blank">3WW</a> earlier this year &ndash; as these renditions of historical figures live again for a fleeting moment before fading with the light of the projector.

Young Replicant&#39;s video for Alt-J is a beautiful death march frozen in time.The six-minute black &amp; white clip is a moody, poetic journey into the afterlife. Time around the grief-stricken in this small Mexican community slows almost to a standstill as they mourn the loss of a young woman - who is seen alive with her grandmother in the first moments of the piece.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then a&nbsp;journey across a desert comes with unforeseen hardships - and we as an audience experience these moments of struggle as if they last forever thanks to some excellent post production work. A perfect, morbid, visually arresting resurrection story &ndash;&nbsp;released, approrpriately,&nbsp;at&nbsp;Easter.

Young Replicant&#39;s new Purity Ring video for Begin Again seems intrinsically linked the the album&#39;s title&nbsp;Another Eternity,&nbsp;with a nebulous story of&nbsp;immortality through some dark and&nbsp;unsettling&nbsp;sorcery.&nbsp;Set in an eery&nbsp;puritanical village, the story revolves around a community elder who awaits for a younger body, which takes the form of a young woman who is dug up from a shallow grave. The work &#39;creepy&#39; doesn&#39;t begin to cover it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Purity Ring 'Begin Again' by Young Replicant

Earlier this summer,&nbsp;Alex Takacs - otherwise known as&nbsp;Young Replicant &ndash; was selected as part of the&nbsp;25th Saatchi &amp; Saatchi New Directors&#39; Showcase at Cannes, for his direction of the video for Flying Lotus&#39;&nbsp;Coronus, The Terminator - in which Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, plays a dying man&nbsp;travelling through the&nbsp;intermediate zone&nbsp;between&nbsp;life and death. It was a well-deserved, and frankly&nbsp;overdue accolade.&nbsp;&nbsp;Born in Canada and raised in Los Angeles, Alex started making videos under the name Young Replicant while studying design at UCLA, and over the past five&nbsp;years he has developed a characteristically&nbsp;elegant and&nbsp;otherworldly&nbsp;aesthetic. In the process he&#39;s&nbsp;directed acclaimed videos for the likes of Purity Ring, The xx, Lorde, and Bonobo. We&nbsp;caught up with Alex to ask him some questions about his career to date.&nbsp;Promo News:&nbsp;You started making videos while studying design at UCLA,&nbsp;how has a background in design helped you with your career as a filmmaker?&nbsp;Young Replicant: It&#39;s given me a lot of practical skills, especially in terms of communicating and presenting ideas to the people I work with. Pitches are the main thing, but I also like to create a guide document for different departments in pre-production. It helps get people with different skillsets on the same visual wavelength in a short amount of time.&nbsp;There&#39;s definitely an analytical rigour that you develop as a designer.&nbsp;You&#39;re taught that every element has to serve a purpose, even if that purpose is to confuse or create ambiguity. I think that&#39;s shaped my approach to image making in subtle ways, but I wouldn&#39;t consider my work &quot;graphic&quot; in a formal sense. I&#39;m constantly trying to make things look un-designed and less contrived. Self-analysis and&nbsp;interpretation is often the enemy in that case. &nbsp;Your identifiable style was already in evidence in your Hooray For Earth video for True Loves&nbsp;in 2011. How did that video happen, and what had you done before that?After the <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2010/09/07/baths%E2%80%99-lovely-bloodflow-alex-takacs-and-joe-nankin" target="_blank">Baths video </a>[for Lovely Bloodflow, co-directed with Alex&#39;s original YR partner Joe Nankin] got&nbsp;a little bit of attention, a friend of mine put me in touch with the guys at Dovecote Records. It was an ambitious video for the budget, but it was still the early days so anything felt possible.[vidtoken data:0]When did you realise you&#39;d rather be a filmmaker than a designer?I&#39;ve always known. I would turn my design assignments into video projects whenever I could get away with it, which was often.&nbsp;Your video for Purity Ring&#39;s Fineshrine has a very classical feel. What were you trying to achieve with that video?In 2010 I&#39;d never heard anything like the first Purity Ring album before. The production is shiny and sharply articulated but the lyrics are very earthy and ambiguous. I think that&#39;s what the video was trying to balance; a mythic, Apollonian feeling with elements that were more grounded and bodily.&nbsp;[vidtoken data:1]What would you cite as the main influences on your work?&nbsp;Moments when the membrane of culture is the most thin.&nbsp;You made two contrasting videos for The xx, for Fiction and Chained. How did you overcome the different challenges that each one presented?The first was tricky because the band wanted something that was purely visual. Stretching such a simple idea into two minutes was challenging because I was in a narrative frame of mind at the time. The second video was a little easier because the song allowed for more of a balance between visuals and understated story.&nbsp;[vidtoken data:2][vidtoken data:3]Do you have a favourite camera, lens or piece of tech that you particularly like at the moment?I love a good handheld monitor.&nbsp;What was your thinking behind your video for Lorde? What&#39;s it like working with a teenage prodigy?Lorde had an idea about a close knit group of teenagers taking over a spa. I tried to put my own spin on it and create an interesting narrative for these characters who&#39;ve found a second family. It was an insane one day shoot, but she was very cool and professional to work with. &nbsp;[vidtoken data:4]Coronus, The Terminator is unusual among&nbsp;Flying Lotus videos in that it features the artist on screen. Was it difficult to persuade him to appear in the video?&nbsp;He was actually really adamant about being in the video from the start. The song was a key moment on the album and important to Steve personally, so it made a lot of sense for him to make more than his usual cameo appearance.&nbsp;How would you describe the ideas and meanings of the video? For instance, what is the meaning behind the shantytown under the freeway?I try not to explain my work too much because I think ascribing a meaning to an image can flatten and diminish it. A whole universe of possibilities collapses into one narrow interpretation. I&#39;m always trying to create a complex world that really exists rather than something that&#39;s a symbol or allegory for something else. In Flying Lotus, the images are meant to be felt rather than deciphered like hieroglyphics.[vidtoken data:5]Do you have a favourite among your own videos? If so, which one and why?I don&#39;t really have a favourite, maybe one I haven&#39;t made yet. If I had to pick, I&#39;d say Bonobo&#39;s First Fires was the video where I felt like I was finally working within a style and cinematic language that was personal to me.&nbsp;[vidtoken data:6]What have you particularly loved in film, music and art in the past year or so?A Norwegian film called Blind by Eskil Vogt and a Mexican film called Heli by Amat Escalante which are both semi-recent. Lately I&#39;ve been listening to music by Igor Wakhevitch which isn&#39;t new but new to me.&nbsp;Also, Drake has been particularly good this year.&nbsp;Any new and exciting projects on the way?A few music videos and a short film. &nbsp;How did you react to being chosen to be part of the Saatchi &amp; Saatchi New Directors&#39; showcase?A lot of my heroes have been featured in past showcases so it was very humbling. After the videos for Never Catch Me and Ready Err Not, the director known as Young Replicant&nbsp;addresses another track on the Flying Lotus album You&#39;re Dead! with a fresh approach to the record&#39;s&nbsp;overarching&nbsp;theme - death and the afterlife.&nbsp;As a man lies on his deathbed, reality and dreamtime blurs. But the dying man&#39;s hallucinatory journey is not about to offer him much consolation. Quite the opposite it seems.&nbsp;&quot;I would mention the Tibetan Book of the Dead, but who wants to hear about that?&quot; says Young Replicant. &quot;It&#39;s a story about a father navigating through the afterlife bardo, the intermediate zone, towards a new state.&quot;&nbsp;It&#39;s also a story that FlyLo aka&nbsp;Steven Ellison - who makes a rare&nbsp;appearance in one of his own videos, as part of a &#39;ghost chorus&#39; that trails the father - says &quot;encapsulates the meaning of the record...it&#39;s one of the most important moments on&nbsp;You&rsquo;re Dead!&nbsp;and holds ideas I&rsquo;m planning to explore in my future work.&rdquo; &nbsp;

The XX band member Oliver Sim takes the lead in this second promo for the band from Young Replicant, putting in a strong and mysterious performance in this noir film, set in a spectacular West Coast property. &nbsp;Alex Takacs - aka Young Replicant &ndash; has previously been noted for his canny use of special effects or special scenery. And in his video for The XX&#39;s Chained he had Oliver and Romy submerged in a lido in Cornwall. The XX 'Fiction' by Young Replicant

A relationship falling apart is at the core of Young Replicant&rsquo;s video for Bonobo&rsquo;s First Fires, featuring Grey Reverend on vocals.
At least that&rsquo;s how it seems at first, in YR&rsquo;s first video since their Chained video for The XX. Although appearances may be deceiving in this quietly gripping video that features some memorably contrasting set-pieces involving fire, not surprisingly, and water.

A gorgeously-shot video for The XX&rsquo;s Chained &ndash; second single from the new album Coexist &ndash; by super-talented young director Young Replicant, sees the band surprisingly reconfigured in action mode, but still maintaining their aura of mystique. Romy Madley Croft sinks into watery depths, then bandmate Oliver Sim leaps in to go to her aid, followed by Jamie Smith.The video for Chained was based around Madley Croft&rsquo;s own concept &ndash; and Young Replicant brings it to fruition with characteristic visual flair. The XX ‘Chained’ by Young Replicant – now signed to Pulse Films

A dimension-jumping fantasy adventure for Hooray For Earth&#39;s True Loves by Alex Takacs and Joe Nankin - aka Young Replicant - incorporating excellent SFX, great locations and involving narrative you&#39;d usually find in a blockbuster. And that&#39;s little short of amazing, considering that this is clearly no big-budget video.Alex and Joe&#39;s previous video was the also-excellent movie-style forest-set fantasy for Baths&#39; Bloodflow.
