After scooping prestigious Cannes Lions this year for&nbsp;<a href="https://somesuch.co/uk/directors/kim-gehrig/reel/libresse-viva-la-vulva/" onclick="window.open(this.href, '', 'resizable=no,status=no,location=no,toolbar=no,menubar=no,fullscreen=no,scrollbars=no,dependent=no'); return false;">Viva La Vulva</a>, her music video-like ad for Libresse, Kim Gehrig makes a rare return to music videos proper for Alabama Shakes' singer Brittney Howard's solo debut single, and celebrates everyday life courtesy of of one of Hollywood's most likeable everyday heroes, Terry Crews.The redoubtable star of Everybody Hates Chris,&nbsp;Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Expendables&nbsp;movie series, and more, plays a weary working man&nbsp;who clocks off at the factory, and makes his way home, via a trip to the supermarket - and all the while taking on&nbsp;lipsync duties on Howard's song&nbsp;Stay High. We find that this ordinary day in Athens, Alabama (Howard's hometown) starts to be sprinkled with a certain magic, as his fellow citizens, and aspects of the world start tuning in and contributing to Crew's&nbsp;performance.The video is a really wonderfully subtle combination of realism and fantasy and the result is pure Gehrig. Like her <a href="https://somesuch.co/uk/directors/kim-gehrig/reel/sport-england-this-girl-can/" target="_blank">This Girl Can</a>&nbsp;ad&nbsp;for Sports England, the magic does come from a real place, and she offers the viewer the chance to see things and make a greater than usual, positive response of their own.This is also as much about the place&nbsp;as the performance by Crews, who on receiving the singer's personal request for him to apper in the video, agreed and then insisted it was filmed in her hometown. Howard's&nbsp;family and friends appear in the video - which is dedicated to her father&nbsp;K.J. Howard, and both he and Brittney make cameo appearances. And this is in many ways a timeless, almost Capra-esque&nbsp;portrait of smalltown America, about a real community. Ultimately it tells us that, a place is more than what appears in the headlines. Just like everywhere else,&nbsp;it is about the people.

Saam Farahmand&#39;s second video for ex-Klaxon James Righton&#39;s new project Shock Machine transforms Righton into a fire- and storm-bringing silhouette, capable of stirring and harnessing the elements.It&#39;s a development from Saam&#39;s video for the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9elZY5-k9Q0" target="_blank">eponymous Shock Machine debut</a>, which was inspired by artist Angus Fairhurst&#39;s&nbsp;absent human cutouts. And it also touches on that cosmic quality of some of Saam&#39;s videos for the Klaxons, itself influenced by that awesome 70s mini-film&nbsp;for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nP4WE_-uqE" target="_blank">The Jacksons&#39; Can You Feel It</a>.And a lovely job by Tom Lindsay, for his &#39;audio-visual assembly and composition&#39;.

Sunset approaches, and the tide is coming in...&nbsp;Aviation is the prequel, offering the prior&nbsp;chapter to this tale&nbsp;of we can only guess, involves&nbsp;duplicitous love, betrayal and revenge. Turner and Kane are digging their own graves on the beach, ordered by the gangster groom, surrounded by armed goons, the&nbsp;guilt-ridden bride, and a blind-folded&nbsp;string quartet. You can never be sure how likely or often a great music video director is to return once they&rsquo;ve begun flexing their cinematic muscles in longer formats. Jonze makes the occasional appearance. Gondry rocks back up once in a while with something as witty as always. Wolfe?Goddamn.With his first video in two years, this time for Paolo Nutini&rsquo;s Iron Sky, and just after finishing his already-acclaimed debut feature Catch Me Daddy, Wolfe doesn&rsquo;t just return to music videos, he punches straight to the gut.&nbsp;Like what.Nutini&rsquo;s voice howls above eight minutes of unnerving, haunting images. Each shot filled with its own form of agony. A distant dystopia that feels uncomfortably familiar. Pervasive desperation. Visceral brutality. Looking for salvation through religion and chemicals in equal measure.Wolfe manages to create a video that is as distressing as it is beautiful. Insightful. Alarming. While others take what they&rsquo;ve learned in music videos to features, he&rsquo;s brought it all back; an earnest cinematic poetry that&rsquo;s increasingly rare in our industry.Six minutes in, the crawling tilt down a 20th century fresco while an extract of Chaplin&#39;s&nbsp;The Great Dictator&nbsp;is heard betrays the level at which Wolfe is now creating; a shot that will no doubt be referenced on the silver screen, let alone other videos.Like any great work of film, there&rsquo;s so much to unpack. And at its core, a truth about us we&rsquo;d rather not acknowledge.Goddamn. Tremendous work.

John Hillcoat mixes original lost footage of the late, great Johnny Cash with imagery of the American homeless in his triumphant promo for She Used To Love Me A Lot.For the lead track from Cash&#39;s &#39;lost&#39; 80&#39;s album Out Among The Stars (out March 25th), Hillcoat -&nbsp;a major Johnny Cash fan -&nbsp;shot the video in&nbsp;LA, Santa Fe, New York and prisons in Tennessee and Albuquerque. Images of Wall Street&nbsp;contrast deeply with shots of the downtrodden from across the country, adding a dramatic poignancy to the heartfelt ballad. Fantastic.&nbsp;

Johnny Cash 'She Used To Love Me A Lot' by John Hillcoat

Saam Farahmand ventures into short film territory with this elliptical narrative that has been &ldquo;inspired by the music and magic of Daughn Gibson&rdquo;.
Daughn is a singer-songwriter from Pennsylvania (he was previously the drummer of stoner metal outfit Pearls And Brass) who released his acclaimed debut album All Hell last year. His brooding, silent A-male presence dominates this film &ndash; he&rsquo;s a bit of an old-fashioned hunk for sure &ndash; as the outsider in a midwestern farm, and the hero who must hold the forces of doom at bay.
Several tracks from All Hell are featured in Another Hell &ndash; an occasion where Saam has gone for straight Mallick-style cinematic beauty.

George Belfield&#39;s video for Richard Hawley&#39;s majestic Don&#39;t Stare At The Sun has a compelling, almost wilfully simple concept. These are scenes from ordinary life, each lingering shot takes in the back of someone&#39;s head. These are people in contemplation, whereever they are. And they do offer a reflective mood that gels with Hawley&#39;s trademark melodious delivery. But it also becomes increasingly intense...The young director, who directed the impressive video for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2011/11/21/dva-ft-vikter-duplaix-madness-by-george-belfield/" target="_blank">DVA&#39;s Madness</a> just over a year ago, shot this over three days in and around Hawley&#39;s hometown of Sheffield, working with local street-cast people, and shooting on 35mm film. This 90 sec viral for the new Nokia music app that allows users to record their own, instantly shareable music, by looping and recording various sounds with their Nokia N8. That means recording anything - including cute yapping dogs that happen to be visiting a doggie beauty parlour in Shanghai. 
It's beautifully done - Ross McLennan shot it, Tom Lindsay supplied the razor-sharp edit, MPC recreate the graphics from the app and composite them to the footage - and surely going to be huge.

Shot &#39;aged VHS home movie&#39; docu-style by Florian Hoffmeister, with bang-on styling and make-up by a styling team including MVA winner Hannah Edwards, Nova Dando and Christine, the end result is another ingenious, effortlessly cool video by Saam. And George never sounding better...
