Hugh Mulhern directs a surreal performance promo for&nbsp;Fontaines D.C.In the video for Skinty Fia - which takes its namesake from the group's upcoming third LP - we see vocalist&nbsp;Grian Chatten in the middle of a hedonistic celebration, trapped among a cast of eccentric characters, bizarre rituals and an overflowing sense of excess.&nbsp;The video opens with an oscillating multicoloured light darting through empty fields and into an enigmatic building, before the concept distorts into a haunting series of warped vignettes. The dreamlike aesthetic is grounded by Chatten's calm and collected attitude, which contrasts the disorder and chaos around him.&nbsp;In the same vein as the other video releases from this album, the concept transcends the performance and morphs into something otherworldly and uncanny, and perfectly fits the unusual atmosphere in the song.&nbsp;

'Sorry it’s not disco, we lied. It’s an album of terrible lows and even worse highs’&nbsp;- say Irish indie rock heroes Fontaines D.C. about their forthcoming third album, Skinty Fia. And the first video from the LP - directed by their regular collaborator Hugh Mulhern - is appropriately haunting.Centred around the band's performance of first single Jackie Down The Line - the&nbsp;last to grace Catford Theatre before it undergoes extensive renovation - Mulhern’s video also introduces the mysterious figure of Jackie as he navigates the harsh conditoins of a toxic relationship.&nbsp;This vision for the doomed romance sees a dedicated&nbsp;suitor in a jaunty hat - played by acclaimed choreographer and Kanye collaborator Black Haine - with an abundant supply of roses, seduced by sirens who incite violence. It evidently pays not to ghost a girl who is keen on archery. &nbsp;&nbsp;The dark theatricality of the concept feels evocative of early 90's grunge videos, and boasts brilliant performances centered around an unsetlling, abstract narrative. And Mulhern has also carried this concept into the live performance video of the track for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJvwi3N80g0">The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon </a>-&nbsp;creating a new perspective of the narrative, through a one-shot drone setup.&nbsp;

Brother Leo is an astronaut&nbsp;who encounters Cupid on a trip to outer space, in Cass Virdee's dizzily entertaining&nbsp;video for Naked.Virdee sends Brother Leo - aka Ola Svensson - into the Heavens to meet Cupid, played by&nbsp;dancer Celine Fortenbacher, sitting in a fluffy cloud&nbsp;- who shoots an arrow unerringly through his space suit, but is herself struck by the traveller from Earth.Through well art directed studio set pieces and a smattering of visual effects, Virdee establishes a frothy '70s influenced performance - an updating of a&nbsp;musical theatre production from a bygone age, with a Hubble Telescope version of outer space as the jawdropping&nbsp;backdrop to the sweet tale of Cupid and the Spaceman.&nbsp;

An unlikely protagonist gets the release we're all yearning for, in Thomas Davis' action-packed promo for NOISY's Young Dumb.&nbsp;Having established a relationship with the group on a number of previous videos, Davis takes a more narrative direction with this one, which follows an old man making the most of a post-lockdown world.&nbsp;From choreography in the street to smoking a joint and ending up at a packed club, the man - brilliantly played by&nbsp;Andrew Norman - embodies our collective fantasies of getting out and finally being able to live life to the full again, and Davis heightens this fantasy through a stylish and invigorated lens.&nbsp;Paying homage to iconic 90's videos whilst being simultaneously imbued with a contemporary aesthetic, it's a spectacular watch, and possibly Davis' best video yet for the NOISY boys.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]THOMAS DAVIS:<blockquote>I wanted to make a video that was flamboyant and memorable.</blockquote>“I’m always buzzing to be working with NOISY. These boys always write absolute belters of tunes. This one especially, I felt like the video really needed to represent the current climate in the world, but in an outrageous way. Life is to short to give a fuck sometimes, so you’ve just gotta let go. Even if you are getting old."To be honest, I’m not sure how the idea for this video came around. It all sorta just clicked in place. I had recycled a few scenes from other videos that I had pitched in the past year, but they never got commissioned. Like the toilet scene with the water bottle, that was part of another pitch that wasn’t as successful. Brock Neal Roberts directs a tender, introspective promo for Arlo Parks' Caroline.&nbsp;Recounting the story of a couple trying - and failing - to make each other happy, Parks is a spectator in this concept, watching and empathising as a&nbsp;torrent of emotions weigh heavily overhead.&nbsp;The video has a gentle, authentic aesthetic, similar to Roberts' UKMVA-winning promo for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/07/27/berwyn-trap-phone-brock-neal-roberts/65800">Berwyn's Trap Phone</a>. His ability to communicate complex emotions through subtle performance and&nbsp;framing - care of DoP&nbsp;Jack Reynolds - is perfectly suited to the concept, and elevates Parks' already transcendent presence on screen.&nbsp;

To celebrate the fifty year anniversary of his seminal 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman, Yusuf/Cat Stevens has reimagined it's tracks for 2020 - including a more laidback, jazzier&nbsp;version of the album's biggest hit Wild World. Now Effie Pappa has visualised the new recording, drawing inspiration from the classic 1940s movie Casablanca, and reminding us that&nbsp;even the toughest days can be brightened by the optimistic perspective of youth.Pappa conjures up an atmospheric club, like Rick's Bar in Casablanca, but with kids playing the roles of Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Dooley Wilson, and others. A card game between two of the young characters is the jumping off point for depictions of the just how wild the world can be, and always has been - with newsreel footage from around the same time period intercutting the scenes in the club.&nbsp;Rendering a modern day filter on the 1940s story reveals how different yet how similar some of the global issues we now face. But ultimately&nbsp; as the young leads get togethe in a aircraft witnessing an animated dog fight, the WW2-era world dissipates, as they find themselves having tea in space, and drifting&nbsp;towards the heavens in a symbol of hope.[imgtoken data:1]Packed with visual imagination and wonder, Pappa's&nbsp;video is also a product of the conditions imposed by the pandemic: developed and produced remotely between the UK and Greece, where the shoot took place. In many ways, the video itself is a&nbsp;testament to the spirit of optimism in the new world we find ourselves in.And Yusuf/Cat says of the film: “It shows how much we need art to direct our thoughts sometimes towards inexpressible goals; to relive early childlike innocence and keep our eyes of hope open beyond the clouds of war and darkness.”
