Maxim Kelly directs a genre-bending epic for Mercury Prize-shortlisted rock band Black Country, New Road.&nbsp;Cleverly&nbsp;balancing&nbsp;an abstract narrative with anachronistic imagery, the focal point of the story is an alien who has crash-landed to Earth, who gets a less-than-welcoming treatment from the humans who capture him.Spanning a six-minute runtime, the video is peppered with a vast array of references, from vintage sci-fi films through to low budget B-movies and classic drama films. And the Concorde plane is in there too.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Flanked with archival footage, the video is ambitious and wide-ranging, but never once feels stretched too thin, which is a remarkable achievement for a concept that covers so much ground in it's comparably short runtime.<blockquote>We took the 6 minute-plus runtime as an asset.</blockquote>“On the surface, the concept was straightforward," says Kelly. "But&nbsp;for a band who namecheck everyone from Scott Walker to Kanye West, and the pronounced mix of genres in their music, it felt right to take an analogous approach with the visuals. Throw as many references together as possible and see if we, too, could get it all to hold together as a piece."We took the 6 minute-plus runtime as an asset. It gave us the time needed to weave as much as possible into the film. A walking video in parts, but also with a narrative running through...&nbsp; combined with miniatures and VFX.&nbsp;"The band were so supportive and amazing. They gave us the encouragement to just go off on one! And being a massive fan of their music, it was a genuine pleasure to work with them on this film.”

Alekxandr teams up with Jane Moriarty to co-direct a one-shot journey from romantic optimism to an emotional storm.As the singer-songwriter performs to camera what appears to be a cozy interior, altered lighting offers suggestions of what is coming later on - light and shade turns to wind and rain, as&nbsp;Alekxandr uses the camera to reflect&nbsp;volatile emotions of grief.Filmed at Southwark's Platform Art Studio - where the song was written a year ago - the environment around&nbsp;Alekxandr's performance, created by&nbsp;artist-in-residence&nbsp;Harry Whitelock,&nbsp; is of a painter working to conjure their muse whilst using colours that suggest the flower of the songtitle.Alekxandr has been directing and producing his own visuals since he made his debut in 2018 with the&nbsp;evocative a l t c r y s t a l s. He says: “We wanted to make the elements rage indoors to express how dramatically your inner life can change regardless of what's happening outside”.Co-director Jane Moriarty adds: “I wanted to centralise Alekxandr’s performance and connection to the camera. We both come from a theatre background, so having all the lighting, production and performance elements happening live, with no room to fix anything in post was a challenge we totally embraced."

Nina Nesbitt tries to outrun her problems, in Wolf James' punchy promo for Life's A Bitch (L.A.B.)The dazzling promo features vibrant coloured lighting and two different Ninas - one "perfect" version who tries to hold things together, and the other representing her darker, more impulsive side - which gives the concept interesting, Jeykll &amp; Hyde-style layers and a unique perspective.&nbsp;The frenetic cinematography works well with the idea, allowing a sense of unabashed energy to build from the lilting camera movement and quickfire edit.&nbsp;

Arthur Studholme directs a hilarious promo for Welshy's All For You.&nbsp;We have all had&nbsp;the unfortunate experience of making accidental physical contact with a stranger in a public place, but for this video's protagonist - played by comedian Thomas Gray - he welcomes the first touch, with a girl as they both bend down to pick something up. It could even be described as fate...[imgtoken data:1]"The concept of this video centres around that strange moment in life when one makes minor unwanted physical contact with a stranger in public," confirms Studholme. "The video explores what goes on inside our protagonist's head the moment this very thing happens to him on the bus on his way home from work."&nbsp;In fact, our hero discovers that every person - or object -&nbsp;he touches afterwards gets a starring role in his fantasies - whether it's running down the beach Baywatch-style, or throwing clay like the loved-up couple in Ghost... and what starts off as a dream becomes a nightmare.&nbsp;The resulting nonsense is absurdly mesmerising.

In Arthur Studholme's imaginative&nbsp;video for Irish singer-songwriter Smoothboi Ezra, a man made of flowers invades the home of a couple as they sleep, and soon causes emotional havoc.​The song Stuck is about the point at the beginning of the end of a relationship, and Studholme uses the powerful vision of the Flower Man as the agent of another strong&nbsp;visual device, to represent that painful moment. One of the couple is woken to carry out the intruder's bidding - which is to paint herself out of their photos. Then the 'whited-out' technique is repeated with the couple's home movie footage, where the Flower Man figure also starts to appear.Studholme fuses these graphic elements together into a very satisfying whole. It's a quietly powerful video and in this case, the fact 'it was all a dream' is no cop-out.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chris Kirtley directs a banging performance video for Newcastle&nbsp;rock trio The Pale White that gets very sticky indeed.&nbsp;&nbsp;"I believe the old saying goes 'All you need to create a cool music video is a paddling pool, 150 litres of molasses, three water guns, four&nbsp;tubs of black treacle and a bag of lemons...'," says Kirtely. "Okay, maybe no one has ever said that. But that's exactly what played a huge part in the video for Pale White's brand new track Glue."
