Alekxandr 'Sunflower' by Alekxandr & Jane Moriarty
Promonews - 4th Nov 2021
Alekxandr teams up with Jane Moriarty to co-direct a one-shot journey from romantic optimism to an emotional storm.
As the singer-songwriter performs to camera what appears to be a cozy interior, altered lighting offers suggestions of what is coming later on - light and shade turns to wind and rain, as Alekxandr uses the camera to reflect volatile emotions of grief.
Filmed at Southwark's Platform Art Studio - where the song was written a year ago - the environment around Alekxandr's performance, created by artist-in-residence Harry Whitelock, is of a painter working to conjure their muse whilst using colours that suggest the flower of the songtitle.
Alekxandr has been directing and producing his own visuals since he made his debut in 2018 with the evocative a l t c r y s t a l s. He says: “We wanted to make the elements rage indoors to express how dramatically your inner life can change regardless of what's happening outside”.
Co-director Jane Moriarty adds: “I wanted to centralise Alekxandr’s performance and connection to the camera. We both come from a theatre background, so having all the lighting, production and performance elements happening live, with no room to fix anything in post was a challenge we totally embraced."
