The times when a music video really astonishes are rare nowadays -&nbsp;but this is one of those occasions. Arnaud Bresson's remarkable video for Flatbush Zombies' James Blake-produced Afterlife creates something&nbsp;impossible, but in such a way that it is, for all intents and purposes, the real thing:&nbsp;an X-Ray version of a hardcore hip-hop video.&nbsp;From the first shot, of a gang carrying the coffin of a friend, to the last, everything is seen through the prism of X-Ray photography... or so you will believe. This is a situation of&nbsp;an essentially straightforward idea that lives or dies by dint of the execution - and the execution is completely flawless. So while your mind will tell you that this&nbsp;just cannot be done - X-ray machines are not safe to use on a film set or location - your eye tells you otherwise.[imgtoken data:1]This was the result of a combination of&nbsp;brilliant vision, skill and that luxury rarely afforded music video production - time. The effect of X-ray photography wa achieved through 3D animation and VFX work that took place via Machine Molle in Paris over a period of months - the initial foortage of the band and cast was shot before lockdown began.&nbsp;As Bresson has explained in a press release: “Today, there is no technology that X-ray films a living being without endangering it, so we worked hand in hand with a post-production company to develop a technical device that would allow us to achieve a similar effect. We used multi-camera tracking, recorded the positions and movements of our characters to extract and apply to our 3D compositions. It took four months of work to find the perfect style.”The result is transparent - one of the music videos of the year so far.

As we know, making music videos beats proper working for a living. But it&#39;s also tough &ndash; really tough if no-one informed you the artist, and his entourage of twerking girls, are all 30 feet tall.Alex Courtès&#39;s latest video explores this unlikely scenario and its remarkable consequences in his new video for Sean Paul and Major Lazer. And the director also plays himself&nbsp;- or a long-suffering hangdog version of himself &ndash;&nbsp;with aplomb.&nbsp;He has the air of a man who&#39;s seen it all, suffered much, but has never quite seen this.The video was achieved with a combination of post and practical effects, with Sean and his posse given the VFX treatment at Machine Molle in Paris.It&#39;s rare for a video to work as straightahead commercial pop video, and satirical comedy on the process - and the storyboard shot will make you laugh or cry, and possibly both - but this definitely has its cake and eats it.

This outstanding&nbsp;video for DJ/producer&nbsp;Surkin&#39;s Oedo 606 is&nbsp;a free-associating riff on a classic short film,&nbsp;by another&nbsp;exciting animation talent out of France, Sanghon Kim - who recently signed to&nbsp;Division.Sanghon&#39;s&nbsp;inspiration is Charles &amp; Ray Eames&#39; Powers of Ten, and although that&#39;s been done before, the approach is the exact opposite of the Eameses - its not scientific, its about the immeasurable&nbsp;nature of love, expressed visually.&nbsp;And the result is a mesmerizing graphic trip.&nbsp;

It&#39;s superhero time - with suitably awesome visual effects - for the monster sound of&nbsp;DJ Fresh vs Diplo feat Dominique Young Unique&#39;s Earthquake. But&nbsp;Jonas &amp; François&#39;s existential superhero satire/homage&nbsp;introduces a costumed gang a lot scuzzier than the Avengers.They cause&nbsp;mayhem in their wake, appear to be on the verge of annihilation, and aren&#39;t too popular with the local populace either.That&#39;s in keeping with the video&#39;s tie-in with Kiss Ass 2. And&nbsp;Jonas &amp; François&#39;s video does its job by engaging in the spirit of Mark Millar&#39;s ultra-violent comic&nbsp;turned movie franchise, rather than including clips from the new film. Great fun - and as ever, great work from the VFX team at Machine Molle.&nbsp;

It started with Midnight City, then continued with Reunion. Now here&#39;s the concluding part of Fleur and Manu&#39;s epic kids-with-superpowers trilogy for M83 - for Wait. And things don&#39;t exactly get wrapped up neatly in this one.At first we&#39;re in the aftermath of the confrontation at the climax of Reunion with the leading telekinetic girl, then we&#39;re in outer space with her boy adversary, and a sequence which isn&#39;t so much influenced by Kubrick&#39;s 2001, as an exact reconstruction (before he becomes the Boy Who Fell To Earth...)But this project was always about creating eyepopping blockbuster movie moments &ndash; and this is arguably the most satisfying of the lot.&nbsp;
