Lock It In

The emotional pain of a break-up&nbsp;is studied through a series of&nbsp;long takes in&nbsp;Mike Baldwin's video for Rhys Lewis.&nbsp;The video for When Was The Last Time starts by introducing the main characters in closeup shots, each in different settings&nbsp;but all connected by the tumultuous emotions that come with ending a relationship. Through slow, revealing zooms, each vignette unfolds to reveal their partner, and we realise we are witnessing the crucial moment of a break-up in each case.Intimate and heartwrenching performances capture the mood of the track without revealing too much information. We never find out any backstory to these scenarios&nbsp;- we don't have to. DoP&nbsp;Benedict Spence utilises simple composition and camera movement to keep the focus on the heart of the concept, and the leisurely pace of the edit allows viewers to linger on each moment.In each case its clear that the person we initially focus on is digesting the news that they are no longer loved. But in Rhys Lewis's own situation, Baldwin adds another twist. This is an emotional and very satisfying video for a sad song.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Inspired by the first line sung by Guy Garvey&nbsp;in Elbow's Empire -&nbsp;"Baby, empires crumble all the time..." - directing team BWTV provide a chilling and sober vision of the Apocalypse.There's is a montage of a nearly deserted world, where high rise&nbsp;buildings fall into dust, or slowly disintegrate, and the signs of a devastating human footprint is seen in judiciously assembled newsreel footage, chronicling the&nbsp;effects of pollution, climate warming, and war.That is mixed with CG animation, where BWTV have created a metropolis undergoing longterm decay - which in itself provides a form of relief from the grim message; a form of light at the end of the bleakness.Crucially, these visuals work extremely well&nbsp;with Garvey's maudlin, reflective vocals on Empire - a new track taken from Elbow's forthcoming album&nbsp;Giants Of All Sizes, released in October.

Akim Laouar Aronsen directs this stylish,&nbsp;tragic neo-noir for Parisian rappers Lefa and Vald - set in a parallel world where the rush of celebrity is pursued at any cost.Aronsen’s video revolves around a fascinating concept. In his brave new world, celebrity is not merely social recognition, but a sensation. And this sensation can be provided by a hallucinogenic drug, extracted from peacock feathers.Lefa and his partner manufacture this drug, and are holed up in a rural home playing happy families - unaware that someone is coming for them. This is Vald, who plays a volatile junkie with all the verve of an upcoming actor. The inevitable violent climax rests on a superb twist - so keep watching until the bitter end.Between photography by UKMVA nominee Adolpho Veloso and dashing wardrobe by Jana Zaharijevic, this video is a real cinematic treat. With bold lighting and compositions that border on the baroque, the video has shades of&nbsp;Ryan Gosling’s&nbsp;film&nbsp;Lost River, shot by the inimitable Benoît Debie.

Alexandra Reghioua's futuristic clip for French electronic artist Claude Violante takes us into the scientist's lab, where a young woman is the subject of a strange form of&nbsp;treatment that taunts her unconscious mind.In a mix of digital and theatrical imagination, masked and robed figures play out scenarios that veberate into the involuntary motion of the patient.It's an impressive directing debut by Paris-based photographer and creative director&nbsp;Reghioua, who creates a convincing psycho-fantasy supported by&nbsp;outstanding art direction and VFX.
